Pay for CSC Services with Mondex
With effect from October 19, you can pay for CSC services with Mondex at the Information Counter (G/F of Pi Chiu Building) if your CU Link Card is valid for such payments. For example, you can use Mondex to purchase a network card and cable to connect to ResNet, to buy thermal transparencies for presentations, to pay for the "Information CD" containing the software for a modem/ResNet connection and also to deposit money into your Print Account for the Auto-charging System on printing services.

For each transaction, although the Bank will charge the Centre an additional for handling cost, we will not pass on this cost to you. However, due to this implementation, the extra bonus on deposit money in your Print Account will no longer be credited, regardless of whether you pay by cash or Mondex.

Campus Network Access Points in University Library Study Rooms
You can now use your own computer to access the Campus Network and the Internet through the network connections in the Library study room.

The access method is the same as in classrooms. You should first summit an on-line registration form http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/csc/network/classnet/register.html to CSC/ITSU. On receiving the confirmation of the centre, you can then access the network. The speed is up to 10Mbps which is the same as in our computer laboratory. If the portable computer or the notebook belongs to a faculty or a department, please check with your LAN Administrator as it may be already registered.

IT Training Programs in October
This October, we will continue to hold the Office 97 series of seminars for the University staff. The programme including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Access 97. Skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced are catered for.

Also, a seminar about the use of the Financial Database (FinDeX) will be held for those who need to access historical financial records in the CompuStat, CRSP and PACAP databases residing on the Data-Intensive Computing Server(DICS) - through the web.

Moreover, if you wish to learn how to author your own homepage but do not have time to attend lectures, you can learn from our HTML series that is available on-line. The program is provided on a self-learning basis. You can obtain the course notes, receive the instructions and join a discussion with the instructors all on-line.

More information can be read at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/csc/training/.

Virus Scanning Programme in Datalocker
To protect working files that reside on Datalocker (a network disk storage medium for files in CSC PC LAN), an anti-virus scanning programme called Trend Office Scan was installed on the server recently. The programme will perform real-time checking and also scan files for viruses every Sunday at 9pm. If a file is infected, it will be renamed with "vir" as its extension. You can use the clean function of "Trend Office Scan" to clean the infected file.

For any enquiries, please contact the Laboratory Consultant for assistance.

Trouble Shooting Non-recommended Network Cards to Access ResNet
The ResNet HelpDesk has recently received many reports about difficulties in using a "Realtek-8029 type" network card in making connections to ResNet. We then examined the network port status for these ResNet users and found that a different ethernet address had been detected by the network equipment. For security reason, the network port is disabled if a different address is detected.

It is very difficult to find out why and how a different address is generated. However, the problem was usually caused by an unstable network card driver, particularly in Windows 98. We thus recommend our users to obtain the latest driver from the card manufacturer. Most users reported that they could successfully make connections to ResNet after installing a new driver.

We strongly recommend ResNet users to use the model described on the ResNet home page at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/csc/resnet/netcard.html. In our experience, this can greatly reduce compatibility problems introduced by different driver and hardware versions.

You may have other experiences and questions on this issue. You are welcome to join the coming ResNet User Group Meeting and share your experience with other users.
