Campus-wide Anti-virus Solution: Department Installation and Personal License
Through the announcements in issues 10 and 14, or at the one-day training program for department representatives held
on September 8, you should be aware of the Campus-wide Antivirus Solution program being implemented. A list of
servers which have been installed with the program and hence are safely protected, can be found at:
http://avserver.csc.cuhk.edu.hk/avweb/TVCS_NT_Novell.htm
Besides servers and microcomputers owned by the University, our license for the Campus-wide Anti-virus Solution program
also extends to the personal computers of students and staff. Each staff member and full-time student of the
University is entitled to one PC-cillin anti-virus software license for a computer at home or in a hostel or residence.
Our students and staff can obtain a copy of PC-cillin by downloading it from http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/avcentre .
As a more convenient alternative, CSC/ITSU has sent one package of PC-cillin software to each department and several copies to the University Library System.
Staff members can use that package of PC-cillin and circulate it within their departments. Besides, students can borrow the PC-cillin
CD and the manual from any Reserve Book Counter of the following libraries;
- University Library,
- Chung Chi College Library,
- New Asia College Library,
- United College Library,
- New Asia College Library,
- Architecture Library and
- Medical Library at Prince of Wales Hospital
In the Library Catalogue, you can find the checkout status of this software through the "Reserve List by Prof/TA"
(type in CSC/ITSU) and the "List by Course" (type in Computer Services Centre).
The license agreement and other details can be found on the Anti-virus home page at:
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/avcentre.
More Internet Access Points Available on Campus
Starting from September 1998, CSC/ITSU has been working with several departments to provide more Internet access points on Campus. Apart
from the network outlets that are currently available in the classrooms and the University Library (see CSC/ITSU Digest Issue 17),
another 13 Internet access points have now been set up in United College. After registering the Ethernet Address of your network card
on our system, you can then plug your computer into any one of these ports to access the Internet.
In accessing the network, you should observe the rules and regulations which are stated in the "Campus Network - Policies and
Guidelines on Access Usage". Please visit
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/csc/network/classnet for more details.
System Security Measures during Y2K Rollover
There is a possibility that hackers will increase their efforts to invade computer systems during the Y2K rollover period. CSC/ITSU
therefore strongly suggests that you should take the following basic precautionary security measures for all of your computers which are
connected to the Internet (in our case, through the Campus Backbone Network) before the arrival of the new millennium:
- Change passwords
- Install system security patches
- Use the most updated virus scanner to scan for and eliminate viruses
- Disable unnecessary system services that are potentially accessible
to hackers
- Shutdown computer and computer systems before you leave your office
for the new year holidays (this is a single most effective step to
take against hackers during the Y2K rollover period)
Visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/y2k for more information.
Equipment On-loan Service
Faculty and staff members can now borrow the following equipment for use in their department:
- Notebook Computer
- LCD Display Unit
- Video Monitor
This is especially useful if you need to do a presentation using this equipment but can not borrow it from your department.
These items are available on loan as an extension to our self-sustained service. The charge rate and application form can be read
online at
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/mcas/ims.htm
WebCT Training Schedule
This semester, there are 47 WebCT courses being conducted and more than 1000 students have used this web-based tool to communicate with
their teachers and classmates, to complete course quizzes, and to obtain course notes and other course information. If you are a
teacher and plan to use a WebCT in your course next semester but have never attended our training session, we suggest you and your
assistants attend the WebCT training sessions in early December.
Register on-line at
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/csc/training .
Decommission of Prolog and Lisp on Theory
Since 1998, the usage of "Prolog" and "Lisp", programming languages installed on "Theory", have been negligible. After consulting with
potential users, we have decided to decommission them from December 10 1999.
