" Seminar - "Web-based Teaching: Introducing a New University-wide Platform"
University staff members are cordially invited to a seminar "Web- based Teaching: Introducing a New University-wide Platform" jointly organized by the Computer Services Centre / Information Technology Service Unit (CSC/ITSU), and the Teaching Development Unit (TDU). In this seminar, we will introduce you to a new University-wide platform that will be implemented in September and to the use of advanced instructional technologies to enhance teaching and learning.

The seminar will commence with a policy address delivered by Prof. Kenneth Young about the current use of technology in teaching and learning; and the direction of and future plans for web-based teaching on campus. Following his speech, the staff from the Computer Services Centre / Information Technology Service Unit will demonstrate the use of and the support for web-based teaching on Campus.

In addition, several teachers from various faculties have been invited as guest speakers to share their invaluable experience in courses that have been taught using Information Technology. You are invited to join the discussions and share your own experience with them.

Microsoft Campus Agreement Renewal
The current Microsoft Campus Agreement will expire on 31 May 2000. The University has set aside a budget for the renewal of the Agreement for the entire University based on a JUCC Tender being processed. No extra funding will be required from individual departments.

Once the Agreement is renewed, all University departments will be authorised to use the software covered by it. This software includes Microsoft Windows or Windows NT Workstation Upgrades; Microsoft Office Standard or Office Professional; Microsoft FrontPage; Microsoft Visual Studio Professional Edition; Microsoft BackOffice Client Access License; and MS Press Office Starts Here Step-by-Step Interactive.

Computer Accounts of Final Year Students
The computer facilities of the Computer Services Centre are only provided for current University staff and students. Therefore, when you leave the University, your computer account, and data files in it will be deleted automatically. It is your responsibility to archive/backup your data files before leaving the University. The expiry date of all your accounts is set to the last day of the month which printed on your CU Link unless there is special arrangement arranged between CSC and your department/faculty. Individual looking for an extension of his/her account should apply, two weeks before the expiry date, from CSC by sending his/her request through the Special Request Submission System at http://accounts.csc.cuhk.edu.hk/websql.dir/aims/ms_src.html

Print Balance of Your PC LAN Account

You are required to settle any outstanding amount in your Print Account before you leave the University. Otherwise, your record will be sent to University authorities for disciplinary action. Any remaining amount in your Print Account is not refundable but can be transferred other users through the "Print Transfer Service" available on PC LAN.

Internet Access Service for CUHK Alumni

If you wish to use the University Internet Services, which is a charged service, after graduation, you can apply for an account. Details can be found at http://alumni.cuhk.edu.hk or from the Alumni Newsletter which will be sent to you once you have graduated.

Forthcoming Removal of Output Bins for Printouts
It is planned that the output bins, at the G/F of Pi Chiu Building, for storing printouts will be removed on May 31.

User Area Opening Hours on Five Weekends from May 19 to June 19
Due to the installation of a lift in the Pi Chiu Building, the 1/F to the 4/F of the building has to be evacuated during five weekends in the period from May 19 to June 19.

As the building has to be evacuated, the User Area of CSC cannot be open during the period. In order to minimize the impact of the interruption of the computing service due to the closure of the User Area to you, the opening hours of the User Area at Wong Foo Yuan Building will be extended. The details are as following:

User Area, 1/F of Pi Chiu Building

  • Closed between Friday 9:30pm to Monday 9:30am from May 19 to June 19

User Area, Room 103 of Wong Foo Yuan Building

  • Opening hours extended from 9am to 10pm on May 20, 27; June 3, 10, 17 (Saturdays)
  • Opening hours extended from 9am to 10pm on May 21, 28; June 4, 11, 18 (Sundays)

During this period, other computer systems and network services will continue operating as normal.
