University Administrative Units Email System Migration

The email system for University administrative units has been migrated from MS Mail to MS Exchange. The University has been using the MS Mail system for many years and there are around 30 Microsoft Mail Post Offices in the University which provide email services to more than 1,500 University staff members. MS Mail is a secure and efficient email system which provides a tight integration with desktop applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet and scheduling. Using the MS Mail to SMTP Gateway, MS Mail users can also communicate with users of other email systems.

Along with the recent development in Information Technology, especially related to the Internet, users are expecting and demanding even more reliable, flexible and secure messaging solutions. CSC/ITSU evaluated several new messaging solutions last year and finally selected MS Exchange as the upgrade to replace the MS Mail system in the University.

After the selection, we migrated our departmental MS Mail system to MS Exchange last year. The MS Mail to SMTP Gateway was also upgraded to a new MS Exchange Internet Connector. We can communicate easily with existing MS Mail users as well as users of other email systems.

Several new features supported by MS Exchange are:

  • reading and sending email messages using a web browser at a remote location
  • managing individual calendars and schedules using a web browser
  • providing rules support for functions such as automatic email forwarding and/or reply
  • supporting rich-text format in email messages
  • supporting MIME document encoding
  • allowing S/MIME-aware clients to send encrypted mail to one another
In addition, we are now migrating MS Mail to MS Exchange for several departments / units in John Fulton Centre and units in University Administration Building.
