Guided Tour of the Internet
Every year, the ITSC receives visitors from many different organizations around the world. To familiarise them with our services within their short visit, we produced a video to introduce our services in 1991 and revised it periodically. The latest version was finished in late April and is an eight-minute video narrated in Putonghua. Cantonese and English versions will also be available this summer.
Now, you can also watch this video clip on the web at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/about/video.html anytime and anywhere without making an appointment with us. The video clip is transferred over the network using the streaming technology. You can watch the video while simultaneously downloading it from the web, even over the dialup lines. This saves your time in downloading the whole file (The eight-minute video is a 40M file in movie format!). Before watching the program, make sure that you have installed the real player G2 plug-in program into your browser.
If you have your own teaching or departmental-related video and would like others to watch it over the Internet, you may put it on the iHome - your Personal Homepage Server. For example, teachers may put a field trip video on the Internet for their students to access after class. For more information about using this technology on your personal homepage, please read
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/learning/ihome/streaming.html.

Procurement of Y2K Compliant Software and Hardware
In recent issues, we have reminded you to check the compliance status of your hardware and software. And we have also asked you to consult with any business partners and make Y2K contingency plans. This will help you to ease out the pain should any of your software or hardware fail to work due to Y2K problems.
If you have any obsolete programme or hardware (i.e. which cannot be made Y2K compliant), and if they are critical to you, please replace them at once!
Read http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/y2k/proc-y2k.html for more information on Y2K procurement issues.
Additional Classes on Web-page Authoring Tools
Thank you for your interest in the May seminars on "Web Technology". Most of the seminars were full after the first announcement. We received many requests for additional classes for teachers. We have therefore added two additional classes on web page authoring tools, FrontPage and Dreamweaver, in late May. If you plan to create webpages for your course and do not know how to start, you should not miss these seminars.
Register at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/learning/workshops . First come first served. Registrations will only be accepted until the classes are full.
New Postgraduate Hall - ResNet Service Coming Soon
If you pass by the University stadium, you will notice the New Postgraduate Hall is being constructed. Similar to other student hostels, dedicated network connections will also be available in the rooms so that the postgraduate students there can enjoy the ResNet service . The installation work of the network equipment can only be started after the handover of the building by the construction company. It is therefore expected that the ResNet connections will be available in mid-July. Below is the tentative schedule for the ResNet service to the New Postgraduate Hall.
Installation of Fibre Cables May
Installation of Network Equipment June
Testing of Network Mid-June
ResNet Availability Mid-July
More ResNet information can be read at http://www.resnet.cuhk.edu.hk
