all the University teaching staff. In the seminar, we will
introduce you to the use of advanced instructional technologies
in teaching and learning.
Date : June 11, 1999 (Friday)
Time : 2:30pm-4:30pm

The seminar will commence with a recommendation on IT Strategy
Report by Prof. Kenneth Young, and end with his thoughts on future
plans and developments in web-based teaching. There will be a
demonstration by Prof. PingPing Fu, Department of Management,
on using WebCT in course instruction. In addition, the
Centre will also introduce a new series of Learning Technology

Result of Review of Dial-up Access Quota System
After a careful study of the valuable comments we got during the
consultation period, the following aspects of your proposal
will be implemented starting from this Summer:
- Increase the quota-controlled line (29330800 and 29328000) by 276;
- Re-distribute the number of quota-controlled and quota-uncontrolled
lines in a ratio of 4:1;
- Decrease the maximum connection time for the quota-uncontrolled
lines (29330633 and 29330733) to one hour.
However, due to the negative feedback about another aspect of
the proposal from respondents to the consultation paper, we
are not going to reduce the weekly quota for ALL student residences
to access the Internet beyond the campus by 50%. The reduction
only applies to those who have registered for ResNet.
In addition, the quota scheme for summer will be announced
on May 31. Please refer to "Dial-up Services Homepage" -
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/services/dialup/ for details.
Decommission of Gopher System
The gopher system (gopher://gopher.cuhk.edu.hk)
has been serving our university since the year
1992 to handle text-based information on campus.
However, with the increasing popularity of
web-based graphics, and the growing emphasis of
audio-visual elements on the information superhighway,
many departments have already stopped using the gopher
system. Major departments have been migrating their
information from gopher to the University or departmental
web server. The Information Technology Services Centre has therefore
decided to terminate the gopher service on campus starting
from September 1, 1999.
Success of Learning Technology Courses
In the last semester, ITSC designed a series of
activities for teaching staff to assist them to
incorporate information technology into their teaching.
The seminars, tutorial classes, workshops and guided
tours, were attended by over 1,200 head counts. Participants
showed their interest in pursuing the innovative integration
of web-based instructional technologies into courses.

Meeting with LAN Administrators
The Information Technology Services Centre has made a great effort to maintain close
contacts with University LAN administrators and develop
communication between the LAN administrators themselves.
In order to enhance technology transfer, and the
exchange of updated information, we host regular meetings
every four months to discuss different topics. The
last meeting was in April, more than 75% of the LAN
administrators came. They actively participated in
expressing their concerns and ideas about computer network
information security and virus prevention. Our next meeting
will be in August.
If you are a LAN administrator who has never received a
notice about these meetings, please contact our staff as
soon as possible.
