The Consultation Hotline, which is staffed by the User Services Section,
has focused on improving its service. The primary function of the
hotline is to handle urgent requests and to prioritize them according to
urgency.
The hotline operates from 9 a.m. to 1.p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. from
Monday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m on Saturday. You are welcome
to call us at 2609-8845 for any enquiries about the use of our services
and facilities. Our professional staff will be ready during that time to
answer your enquiries.
If the Hotline is busy, you can leave a voice message and we will call
you back. However, due to limited manpower, voice messages will not be
handled immediately. We will try our best to handle your message within
three working days.
Besides the Consultation Hotline, you can contact ITSC through the User
Services Section using other channels. One channel is the Electronic
HelpDesk
http://helpdesk.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk, which has been operating
for several years. Each year we process thousands of requests and
enquiries submitted through e-mail. This has been an effective channel
for requests and enquiries that are not urgent or not in need of
immediate attention. As a matter of fact, the average response time of
the Electronic HelpDesk is only 1-2 days.
Another channel is the ITSC web site
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc which
contains a lot of information about the services and facilities provided
by the ITSC. The content is updated on a regular basis to reflect
changes. In many cases, solutions for an enquiry or a problem can be
found within the web pages.
Virus Protection in DataLocker
When you are working in the User Area, you can store your data files in
the DataLocker (your network storage on ITSC PC LAN). To maintain a
virus-free computing environment in the User Area, ServerProtect and
OfficeScan (virus scanner programmes) have been installed in the ITSC PC
LAN servers and the desktop computer respectively. ServerProtect scans
the files residing on Datalocker and the application server while
OfficeScan scans local drives (e.g. C:, D:, A:) . Because the functions
of file scanning and cleaning are totally automatic, human scanning is
not involved (i.e. your files will not be scanned or opened for
inspection by a person).
If your files are infected by a virus, they will first be cleaned by a
virus scanner. However, if the virus file cannot be cleaned with the
available tools, we will remove these files from the server due to
security concerns. Thus, please always use a virus scanner to scan your
files before saving them in the Datalocker. Being a University member,
you can download a copy of PC-Cillin to your computer to scan and
safeguard your files.

E-mail Scams
What should you do if you receive e-mail messages promising lots of
money?
-
Trust them as much (or as little) as you would if an unknown person
approached you on the street, and tried to talk you into buying gold
rings, London gold, a modelling agency, wonderful electronic gadgets
or drugs.
- If you don't have time to find out who they are and investigate the
situation , just delete the email to end the trouble.
- If you have time and want to help the community to get rid of these
con artists, use a smart e-mail analyser (e.g. www.spamcop.net) to find
out who sent the message to you, and then complain accordingly. Do not
trust the "From:" or "Sender:" info. Most likely, it is forged to
frustrate those who try to catch them.
-
You can also report these con artists to the police, who are well
aware of e-mail crimes.
- Talk to your friends to warn them about the scams.

Prosecution for Spam
Sending a massive number of e-mail messages, or "spam", can be
prosecuted. A businessman was prosecuted for sending 40,000 e-mail
messages to the mail server of an Internet Service Provider which
crippled the normal operation of the mail system of the ISP. For
details, please read
