This semester, over 400 WebCT courses have served 8160 CUHK instructors
and students. To see how WebCT assists our teachers in delivering
courses, you are invited to login to the following exemplary courses
at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/wbt.
a. Molecular Biology by Prof. P.C. Shaw, Faculty of Science
This course provides a structured tool for students to understand
molecular biology. To extend the discussion beyond the classroom,
Prof Shaw communicates with his students using WebCT's "Bulletin
Board" and "Mail" functions. He also releases quizzes
regularly and gives students scores and feedback online.
b. Radiology Programmes by Prof. So Man Ching, Faculty of Medicine
Prof. So uses multimedia technology to present course contents interactively
to further enhance students' learning efficiency. One example of this
interactive learning is online quizzes that provide an opportunity
for students to practice before they take their examinations. Another
example is the "Calendar" function which reminds students
of important events. Students are also divided into different groups
to ease course management.
c. English Online Writing on the Web by Mr. George Jor, Faculty of Arts
Mr. Jor uses the "Presentation" function to encourage students
to put their presentations online. Students upload their html files
to present their final writing projects. In addition to learning how
to write webpages, students can view classmates' presentations after
the course.
d. English Phonetic Transcription by the Registry
This course utilizes a lot of animations, games and on-line exercises.
Over 1600 students have logged into this course to learn phonetics
at their own pace. Course materials are released to the students according
to their learning progress.
e. Putonghua Online by Shaw College
This Chinese web site for students to learn Putonghua online is supported
by multimedia technology. Students can record their voice and listen
to the recordings later. The College has also provided a pre-test
quiz and post-test quiz online. Through the test results, the College
can measure the course's effectiveness using web-based teaching.
WebCT Courses Student Data Update (Second Teaching Term)
If your WebCT course has the same course code as
listed in the Registry's course database, a new student list for the
second term has been uploaded to your 2001-2002 WebCT courses in mid-November.
After this update, only students successfully registered to the course
can login to the corresponding WebCT course. Others will be denied
access. Teachers, however, can still control student access using
WebCT's course management functions.
The next update will be in early January. If teachers do not want ITSC to update the
student lists of their WebCT courses, they can contact our Web-based
Teaching Support by sending e-mail to
learning-help@cuhk.edu.hk.
Protect Your Computer Using
An Anti-Virus Programme
ITSC has recently detected that a number of hostel
computers were infected by computer viruses or worms. These worms
(like Code Red and Nimba) not only try to gain access to the infected
computer systems, but also generate a huge amount of network traffic
that greatly affects the network's normal performance. Due to these
security concerns, we may need to disable the access of any compromised
computers to the Campus Network. Please check whether your computer
has been infected using an updated anti-virus scanner.
No matter if you are working on campus or at home, we encourage you to take the following
measures to protect your computer:
Install a virus scanner for your computer - both at work and at
home. PC-cillin 2000 is a site-license program http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/avcentre
available free for CU staff and students
Set real time scanning on all file extensions.
Update new virus pattern files frequently and never open files without
scanning them.
Do not install more than one virus scanner on your computer
Please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/avcentre
for anti-virus scanner details.
Decommission
of IPX Routing within the Campus Network
In order to enhance the stability of the Campus
Network, IPX routing within the campus network will be stopped on
January 3 2002. ITSC will provide the necessary assistance to the
LAN administrators of the concerned departments/units to ensure access
to central administrative applications would not be affected by this
change.
Should you have any queries regarding the change, please feel free to contact our
consultant at 2609 8823.
ITSC Training Seminars
In this December, ITSC continues to offer courses on MS Office applications and web authoring tools. In addition, we
have specially arranged three seminars on "Securing WLAN Network", "Enrich your Web Content with Streaming
Media: How is it done?", and "Introduction to Clusters: Build Yourself a PC Cluster NOW" for our faculty and computer
staff members.
a. Securing WLAN Network
Date & time: December 10 2001 (10:30am - 12:00noon)
This is an informative session for computer staff to update their
knowledge on WLAN security. Through this seminar, you will learn about
the
WLAN Security
802.1x implementation in WLAN
WLAN Security implementation
WLAN Manageability, Scalability, Performance, Availability
802.11b & 802.11a
b. Enrich your Web Content with Streaming Media: How is it done?
Date & time : December 11 2001 (11:00am - 12:30pm)
With "streaming media" technology, you can deliver digital
sound, video and other multimedia content over the Internet on a real
time basis. The content is continuously streamed into users' computers
and immediately played. There is no need for users to download a huge
file before watching or hearing it. In this seminar, we will show
you how to create streaming media content with some effective tools
and introduce you to the streaming media service provided by ITSC.
c. Introduction to Clusters: Build Yourself a PC Cluster NOW
Date & time: December 13 2001 (9:30am - 5:30pm)
PC clusters are being used for parallel computing applications at
many universities and organizations over the world. The ratio of price
and performance is by far the best. Meanwhile, the Linux-based PC
clusters are receiving increasingly more attention, but putting them
together remains a challenge to most scientists and researchers. This
seminar provides you an unique opportunity to learn how to effectively
build a PC cluster on-site starting from a scratch.
