Accessing Restricted CUHK Sites through Your Broadband Connection

Subscribing to broadband services provided by a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) is becoming popular in Hong Kong. Recently, our helpdesk has received a number of enquiries for connecting to restricted CUHK sites through a broadband connection. These restricted sites include the CUHK News Server and various Electronic Databases in the University Library System* which requires access through a CUHK network connection.

Here is a tip to solve your problem - making the access through a Virtual Private Network, or VPN, over your broadband connection.

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology is to establish a secure, private communication tunnel between two or more devices across a public network (like the Internet). It also allows authorized users to connect to the Campus Network via a public ISP network. For set up and connection details, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/vpn.

*Other configuration details for the access to the Electronic Databases of the University Library System can be read at http://www.lib.cuhk.edu.hk.

Update Your Virus Scanner Regularly
When did you last update your virus scanner?

You should have already installed a copy of the virus scanner PC-cillin into your computer to prevent virus infection. After installation, however, you must continue to fight computer viruses by updating your virus pattern files regularly. As of Jan 31 2002, PC-cillin's virus pattern file is 218 and the scan engine version is 5.63. Please refer to the following sites for details.
