Guidelines for Energy Saving on Computer Equipment

Energy saving is an important issue for both the environment and the economy. As most of us are using computers and their associated peripherals, such as monitors and printers, on a daily basis, we can all save energy by turning on their energy saving features. These features will save a substantial amount of energy, particularly when the equipment is idling and doing nothing. In general, the efficiency of the equipment will not be affected when we turn on their energy saving features because they will resume their full-power mode quickly from the energy-saving mode when we need them to work for us again.

Please check the guidelines and tips on energy saving for desktop workstations (the main system unit), printers and monitors at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/about/energysave.html.

Don't Share Digital Content When You Do Not Have Copyright !!!
We have recently handled a couple of cases in which our users installed "killer applications", i.e. peer-to-peer file sharing, for searching and downloading digital content from the Internet. In these cases, the users downloaded digital content to their hard drives. This downloaded digital content and its copyright did not belong to our users. After downloading, however, these peer-to-peer file sharing applications automatically allowed other users of the software to also download the digital content.

Although most of our users have no intention of providing digital content for which they do not have copyright, the acts violate copyright law. Under current HK laws, distributing copyrighted materials to the general public without authorization can be criminal, and people have been prosecuted for serving similar content from their servers, for profit or not.

If you are not sure whether the material you downloaded is copyrighted, it is prudent to configure your software to disallow serving them out to the public.

In addition, we would like to remind you that whenever you install software, you have to know how it works. You should read the software's Terms of Service very carefully to determine any legal obligations you are undertaking.

For more information about peer-to-peer file sharing, peer-to-peer computing or peer-to-peer content networking solutions, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/about/p2p.html.

Remove the Proxy Server Setting from your Browser NOW
The University Transparency Proxy Server was implemented last August. Through this proxy server, you can enjoy a relatively faster surfing speed. For a better resource allocation, the current manual proxy server, proxy.cuhk.edu.hk, will be retired starting from May 6, 2002. Hence, we recommend that you remove your current proxy setting (if any) in order to gain the full advantage of using the Transparency Proxy Server. Otherwise, you may fail to access overseas webpages beginning this May.

For details about removing your proxy server setting, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/howto/proxy/ .
