The New Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) Logo
If you have visited the ITSC homepage or read our documents recently, you probably have noticed our new ITSC logo. The logo was designed by our colleagues based on a Chinese word (¤¬) which carries the meanings of:

  • Interactive (as in ¤¬°Ê). This depicts our major goal in our application design and work/service attitude as IT professionals.
  • Inter-connected (as in ¤¬Ápºô). The graphics design of the word conveys the impression that we connect our staff and students to the world and to each other.
  • The graphics design of the Chinese word (¤¬) also consists of the four letters 'I', 'T', 'S', 'C'which spell out our strong commitment to provide high quality information technology services for the University. Please visit our homepage http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc to see the new logo!

University Software Standards - September 2000 Updates
In response to the recommendation in the IT Strategy Committee Report (1999), ITSC has published a list of University standard software since February 2000. These University Software Standards are mandatory for administrative units but advisory for academic departments.

Adopting campus-wide software standards is beneficial to the overall IT development of the University as standardization helps to facilitate intra-campus collaboration and electronic document exchange, shortens software adoption time and reduces software training and support costs.

The latest University Software Standards as of September 2000 are: MS Windows98, MS Office2000, Acrobat Reader 4, Netscape 4 or IE 5, OfficeScan, WinZip 8 and SSH. Administrative Units should comply with the current University Software Standards (Sep 2000) not later than 31 December 2000. Please refer to http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/swstandard/ for more information.

    The University Web-based Teaching Platform
An integrated web-based teaching (WBT) platform http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/wbt , which consists of three interrelated tools, was launched in late August. Through these tools, teaching staff should find in easy to apply advanced information technologies to enhance teaching and learning.

The three components of the platform are:

  • Web-based Teaching Links - A University-wide index listing of all web-based courses.

  • This tool provides a University-wide index page listing all available courses in CUHK and links to their online course materials. Teachers can place links here to their courses so that students can quickly locate course materials through this central page. To find out how to make use of it, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/learning/webteaching/
  • CU Forum - A tool for hosting on-line forums which also allows sharing of files and URL links

  • CU Forum was developed by the Information Technology Services Centre for teachers who are looking for a simple web-based teaching tool. Using CU Forum, teachers can specify topics to be discussed by the class, post course materials for download and share links to useful web sites. To open a forum for your class, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/learning/cuforum
  • WebCT - A tool for creating a web-based educational environment

  • WebCT is a software package for the creation of a web-based educational environment. It assists teachers to design and publish web-based course materials. In addition, teachers can monitor the reading progress of each student and distribute course assignments to the class via the web. Students can also have chat online with other members and submit exercises for automatic grading etc. To understand how WebCT works and to apply for a WebCT course, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/learning/webct/

    More WebCT Workshops
If you are a teacher and plan to use WebCT in your course next semester but have never attended our workshops, we suggest that you and your assistants attend the November workshop. For information and registration, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/training .

Notification on Dial-up Quota Time System
In this semester, we implemented a new facility on the "Dial-up Quota Time System" to inform you if the balance of your weekly quota falls below 50 units. The notification will be sent to your mailbox that listed on the On-line Directory http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/directory . You will be reminded to use your remaining quota units with care.

When you have used up all your dial-up quota units, you will not be allowed to make another connection through quota-controlled lines during that week. Any overdrawn quota units will be deducted from your weekly default quota units in the following week. You will have to either use the quota-free lines or apply for an additional quota at http://accounts.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk . Application will only be granted with proper justification.

To enquire about your time quota usage and balance of the current and the previous week, please visit http://accounts.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk .

Access the ClassNet with a New Method
The 3-day pre-registration is no longer required in the new method to access the ClassNet using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology. All you have to do is to install a VPN software in your laptop and have your Campus-wide E-mail System (Mailserv) account ready.

The VPN technology employed in the ClassNet also provides data encryption and additional security for your network connection.

The detailed setup procedures for your laptop to access the ClassNet has been documented at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/classnet .
