Automatic Filtering of Junk or Unsolicited E-mail Messages
A growing business is the use of e-mail messages as a direct marketing tool. If your e-mail address is published online (for example, on a webpage), retailers and businesses can find you and send you catalogs and other information about their products and services. When these e-mail messages do not interest you, you may find them very annoying and adversely affecting your productivity. To get rid of these junk messages, you can install filters in your mail client to automatically move them from your Inbox to a junk e-mail folder, your Deleted Items folder, or any other folder you specify. Please click on the following link for the procedure to install filters in your mail clients such as Eudora, Netscape Messenger and Outlook Express : http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/app/email/filter/ Please also click on the following link for the complete coverage on how the ITSC combat massive unsolicited e-mails to CWEM users: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/about/spam.html
I got a virus alert message claiming that I've sent out a virus infected
e-mail. However, I have never sent out this e-mail to the e-mail address
as stated. Please find out what has actually happened.
Answer: Dear user,
Probably, it is due to Klez which is a mass-mailer worm which drops a
polymporphic EXE virus called ElKern
http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/klez_e.shtml.
Someone's computer has been infected by the Klez virus. This virus then
propagated by sending itself to all addresses listed in the Microsoft
Outlook, Outlook Express and ICQ address books. When the virus looked up
past e-mails, it probably grabbed your e-mail address and then sent out
e-mails using your name as found in an address book.
What can we do about it?
First, please do not trust the From: and To: addresses of your e-mail.
Spammers and viruses know how to hide their identities. They put in
misleading e-mail addresses in the To: and From: fields. What you see
there is untrustworthy. You CANNOT tell who sent the infected email
from that information. If you try to block incoming spam/viruses from
those e-mail addresses, be aware that the infected files often change to
something else after a while.
Currently, the ITSC is unable to customize our e-mail service to block
some particular e-mail address for each individual user. It is simply
because our servers are serving tens of thousands of users. Technically
it is very impractical to implement such a filter at the server.
Instead, such user-level filtering is best implemented by your own
e-mail client program. Please see
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/app/email/filter/ for details.
To stop viruses from propagating, please be sure to have antivirus
software installed on your computer. Also, update the virus pattern
frequently. Please tell your friends and colleagues to do the same. If
all the computers on campus are shielded from viruses, we shall see a
lot less of the problems we are experiencing now. Check
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/avcentre for obtaining updated antivirus
software.
To meet your dial-up access needs, we have revised the summer quota
scheme which will be effective from June 3 until September 1 2002. Under
this scheme, the prime hours have been shortened and the dialup weekly
quota units for student users have been increased. As always, if you
find the quota inadequate, please apply for extra units from the ITSC.
Please visit
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/dialup/quota for the
scheme and other details.
Have a happy summer vacation!
