With CU Forum, classroom discussions can be further extended beyond the
face-to-face class meeting and active learning can be further enhanced
by allowing students to access useful resources with a simple
mouse-click. In 2001-2002, here were 331 forums serving 7,077 teachers
and students. This number is 50% more forums than in 2000-2001.
To facilitate your use of CU Forum, we have further enhanced its
features to make it easier to use. Now you can
- Select to receive forum discussions in your favorite e-mailbox
- View forum-posted photos in a slide show format
- Get a summary of newly posted messages and files' statistics at the
welcome page - "My CUforum"
In addition, the following functions will help forum administrators
manage their forums effectively.

Essentials
Protect Your Computer Using An Anti-Virus Programme
Have you installed a virus scanner onto your computer? And when did you
last update your virus scanner?
You should have installed a copy of the virus scanner PC-cillin into
your computer to prevent virus infection. After installation, however,
you must also continue to fight computer viruses by updating your virus
pattern files regularly. As of Sep 26 2002, PC-cillin's virus pattern
file is 349 and the scan engine version is 6.150. Please refer to the
following sites for details.
- Free download of PC-cillin:

Dialup Quota Scheme
To ensure the fair sharing of resources at the University, a Dialup
Quota Scheme has been implemented on some of the modem lines since 1998.
For staff users, the scheme is the same throughout the year. For student
users, the scheme in term time is different from the summer time. Below
are the highlights of this scheme,
- When your weekly dialup quota balance falls to one-eighth of the
assigned weekly quota, we'll e-mail your balance to your address in the
Online Directory.
- When you continue to use the quota controlled lines after going over
your quota, you will get an error message of "Password incorrect" even
though you have entered a correct password. You will have to use quota
uncontrolled lines for the rest of the week.
- You can check your previous and current week dialup access history at
http://accounts.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk.
- If you find the existing quota insufficient, you can apply for
additional quota units from us.
The scheme and other details can be read at

Additional Workshop on "Getting Connected @ CUHK" for Student Users
In late August, we held a series of seminars for new students to become
familiar with our services. We received many positive responses and most
of you showed great interest in learning about the network services
being provided.
Due to the overwhelming response, August registrations were quickly
filled. To further encourage your understanding of the network
infrastructure and assist you in effectively connecting to the network,
additional classes will be held on Sep 28 and Oct 11. In these sessions,
you are welcome to bring your notebook for a practical session.
Registration and the programme details can be read at
http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/training.
