African Dictators E-mail Scam

Lately, a large increase has been seen in the junk emails sent worldwide promising you millions of dollars. For instance, one scam asks you to launder money for some African dictators. Unfortunately, some of our campus users may be tempted to give it a try, thinking there is little to lose if the money does not really come through. Actually this is a well-known scam, and you can lose thousands of dollars (or more) if you respond.

Visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/app/email/scam.html to see more email scam examples and what to do about them.

ResNet Upgraded at College Student Hostels

The ITSC Student User Consultation Committee
A management policy of ITSC is that users should be widely consulted before any services are launched, changed or decommissioned.

Under this policy, ITSC has established various communication channels with users including ad-hoc user group meetings, e-mail helpdesk, newsgroup, telephone contacts and person-to-person meetings through which users' comments have been actively solicited and considered.

The ITSC Student User Consultation Committee is one of these channels. It was established by ITSC in February 2002. The membership of the Committee includes representatives of student unions, student representatives of faculties and representatives of ITSC.

Please visit the Committee's homepage at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/succ for information about the student representatives, past agendas and minutes.

The 3rd Committee Meeting will be held on:
Date : October 18 2002 (Friday)
Time : 5:30p.m.-7:00p.m.
Venue : ITSC Seminar Room, Room 120-121 Pi Chiu Building
You can submit items through the student representatives for the Committee to discuss.

User Area Updates

  1. Instant Recovery of Harddisk
For your convenience, we have recently installed hardware called WatchDog on the User Area computers. This hardware allows instant recovery of the harddisk so as to reduce the boot up time of a computer. This, in turn, will provide you with a faster start up time.

  2. Saving electricity
If you come to the User Area and find that most of the monitors are in standby mode, don't panic! To save electricity and natural resources, monitors that have been left idle for 20 minutes or more will be automatically turned to a standby mode. To login to the computer to start your computer work, you only need to press the 'Esc' key on the keyboard.

  3. New Software
More drawing tools and web publishing packages have been upgraded or installed in the User Areas this semester. They include Frontpage 2002, PageMaker 6.5, Paint Shop Pro 7.02, Cool 3D 3.0 and PhotoImpact 6.0 .

Please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/compenv/userarea/software.html for a complete software listing. Smart Card Reader
The Smart Card Reader is a little blue device connected to every computer in the User Area. You can use it to retrieve your personal information stored in your CULink.

After a successful login to the ITSC PC LAN, you can find an "CULink Enquiry" icon displayed on your desktop. You can then choose to view your personal information in either Chinese or English. By selecting the appropriate category on the navigation bar, you can check

New Discussion Rooms Well-equipped with Computer Facilities
If you need a private and enclosed area equipped with computer facilities for group discussions, you may consider reserving the newly renovated Discussion Rooms in the User Areas.

In both of the User Areas at Pi Ch'iu Building and Wong Foo Yuan Building, the Discussion Room is located next to the Consultation Room. In the Discussion Room, you can use the computers equipped in the room or your own laptops to connect to the campus network via ClassNet.
