Hoaxes or New Viruses

We sometimes receive forwarded email messages with virus alerts which warns us to be aware of certain e-mail messages. Before forward this kind of warning message to friends or take any actions, you should check whether the warning is an e-mail hoax.

Hoaxes, which usually arrive in the form of an e-mail message, only mean to frighten and mislead you. The contents regarding the virus alerts are mostly not true. On receiving mail that appears to be a bogus message about a new virus, you should visit the following sites to search for more information about it and to determine whether it is a virus or an e-mail hoax:

Mind Your Password

The following scenario may happen to you...

You want to connect to the dialup facility to access the Internet, but the system responds that your weekly dialup quota has been exceeded and disallows you to connect. However, you are certain that you haven't used the dialup facility during the week. Oops! Someone else may have compromised your CWEM password and used to access the dialup facility.

Many online applications now use CWEM password for authentication. In order to protect your interest, it is extremely important for you to select a secure password to prevent others from compromising it easily. Also, you should change your password periodically, for example, quarterly.

Last but not least, you should always keep your password to yourself. NEVER share it with others !

Please visit for the http://accounts.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk/resetpasswd information about changing your CWEM password and the recommendations for a secure password.
