Disk Storage Upgrade for Campus-wide E-mail System (Mailserv)
To cope with the ever-growing demand for e-mail communications on campus, the ITSC upgraded the disk storage sub-system of the Campus-wide E-mail System (Mailserv) in October. Since the upgrade, your default disk quota has been extended to 10 MB.

The upgrade of the disk storage sub-system required two operations. The first, which was to replace two file servers, was completed successfully in two stages in July and early October. You probably experienced better performance in receiving or sending e-mail after this replacement.

The second operation was to transfer all existing data (i.e. your e-mail and files) to faster and larger disk storage. Having recognized the importance of data integrity and the high availability of email services, ITSC conducted the on-line data migration of files between 08:00 on the 19th and 24:00 on the 20th October. Normal e-mail services were continued during this period.

Should you find any problem regarding the upgrade, please do not hesitate to e-mail us at postmaster@cuhk.edu.hk.

    More ClassNet Access Points
ClassNet provides networking outlets in lecture theatres and classrooms so teaching staff and students can access the Campus Network and the Internet during lectures and tutorials. Together with audio-visual equipment and multimedia applications, this facility is provided to enhance teaching and learning.

ClassNet access has now been further extended to the Lecture Theatre of Shaw College and Teaching Block V of Chung Chi Building. You can either use your notebook computer or the built-in computers of the lecture theatres to log into the campus network.

Details can be found at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/classnet

Talk on 'Computer Crime' on November 16
Computer crimes are endangering our privacy and potentially affecting our property and safety. With the easy availability of hacking tools, even a novice computer user may easily access other computers, possibly without considering that this act will constitute a crime and may have serious consequences. The victim of the intrusion may have his/her valuable data changed, copied or erased, and suffer a computer system failure.

In order to provide staff and students with an insight into issues regarding computer crime, the ITSC hosted a talk on this topic on November 16. We were grateful to have Mr. Damon Ng from the Computer Crime Section of the Commercial Crime Bureau, to give examples of and explain the laws on computer crime. Mr. Thomas Tsui and Miss Carol Chiu of the Centre also briefed participants on the ITSC's policy and guidelines for accessing the campus network, and ways to improve the protection of computer systems against intrusions.

Over 120 staff and students attended this talk and showed keen interest on this topic. If you missed this talk, you can view the presentation material at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/training . Check this bulletin for details of future talks on this topic.

Seminar: Assessing the Consequences of Information Technology in Education: Issues, Problems, and Opportunities
Technology business is people business. To implement a strategic technology plan, it requires tremendous amount of financial resources and dedicated professional staff. For educational institutions and schools, investing huge amount of resources on both bandwidth and human technology infrastructure under limited budget has become necessary to stay competitive.

On November 29, the ITSC hosted a seminar to examine the problems and opportunities related to using information technology in course delivery and the issue of using computer technology to enhance scholarship and teaching. We were particularly grateful that Prof Yin shared his valuable views and experience with us. Prof Yin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Business Education and Office Systems, College of Business and Economics, at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He teaches computer network administration, E-Commerce development, multimedia authoring and production, and technology-based training.

The presentation material is now available on-line, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/training for details.
