Upgrade of Electronic HelpDesk System

The Electronic HelpDesk (http://helpdesk.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk) is the webimplementation of the electronic consultation service. The system will be upgraded between Jan 22, 7:00 pm, and Jan 23, 8:30 pm. This upgrade will further enhance its built-in tracking system which enables you to enquire about the status of a problem/request you submitted; and also ensures no problem/request submission will be lost.

The new Electronic HelpDesk System also provides you with a powerful searching feature for accessing its knowledge base. Hence, you can browse through the knowledge base for solutions before you submit a problem/request.

During the upgrade period, all enquiries sent to ITSC enquiry mailboxes will be held. ITSC support staff will attend to your enquiries as soon as the service is resumed.

Besides, please visit ITSC webpages (http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc) where you can find answers and solutions to most of the commonly asked questions. Or, you can call the Consultation Hotline at 2609 8845 for assistance.

User Area PCs Upgraded

We always aim at providing high-quality services for our users. To attain this goal, we are constantly upgrading our computers and making improvements in the User Areas (1/F Pi Chiu Building and Room 103 Wong Foo Yuan Building).

In mid-January, 74 Pentium IV 2.4 GMHz PCs have been introduced to replace the current Pentium II 300-350 PCs. These Pentium IV PCs are equipped with 512MB memory, a 80GB harddisk, and a DVD/CD-RW Combo. A variety of applications have been available on these PCs to facilitate your computer work.

Details of this upgrade can be found at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/compenv/userarea/hardware.html

Protect Your Computer Using An Anti-Virus Programme

ITSC has recently detected that a number of hostel computers were infected by computer viruses or worms. These worms not only try to gain access to the infected computer systems, but also generate a huge amount of network traffic that greatly affects the network's normal performance. Due to these security concerns, we may need to disable the access of any compromised computers to the Campus Network. Please check whether your computer has been infected by using an updated anti-virus scanner.

No matter if you are working on campus or at home, we encourage you to take the following measures to protect your computer:

  • Install a virus scanner on your computer - both at work and at home. PC-cillin 2002 is a site-license program which is free for CU staff and students (see http://avserver.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk)
  • Set real time scanning on all file extensions.
  • Update new virus pattern files frequently and never open files without scanning them.
  • Do not install more than one virus scanner on your computer.

Please visit http://avserver.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk for anti-virus scanner details.
