A New Supercomputer for Research Projects Requiring
Huge Memory
A new supercomputer, Sun Fire 6800, has been recently launched for research that requiring huge computer memory. The Sun Fire 6800 is a shared-memory computing system comprising of 16 superscalar SPARC V9 (UltraSparcIII 64-bit) processors and 64 GB memory. This system is a powerful, highly available and mission-critical computing platform with a variety of advanced mainframe-class availability features, several popular scientific research applications and Sun HPC Cluster Tools 5 software. The ITSC High-performance
Support Team is ready to provide consultations on the use of the Sun
Fire 6800 and on the installation and customization of user
programs in the system. In addition, we will organize a series of seminars
and workshops on high-performance computing in November. The schedule and
other details will be announced later through the ITSC Digest. The Microsoft Campus Agreement has been renewed for the University. All University departments are authorized to use the software covered by the new Microsoft Campus Agreement for the year 2003-2004. The Campus Agreement also gives the University the right during the agreement to run the above software on all the institution-owned PCs in our institution. Under the Work at Home Use Rights, faculty and staff members also have the right to run one copy of the software, for school-related purposes only, on a home PC, either a laptop or desktop, that they own or lease. The User Area at Room 127-133 of Pi Ch¡¦iu Building has been closed for renovation until August 31. During this period, please use the User Area at Room 103 of Wong Foo Yuan Building. In the Wong Foo Yuan Building User Area, you can still find high-end computers and advanced laser printing services. In addition, our duty-consultant is always available to answer your enquiries during opening hours. The ITSC is going to conduct the "Certificate Course in Information Technology Essentials" for
staff of the University in August 2003. Composed of six modules, viz. (a)
the Internet and its applications, (b) Web-based teaching, (c) the smart
card and its applications, (d) enterprise computing, (e) document management,
and (f) information security, the Course is part of a training initiative
to help develop the IT competence of administrative and support staff. Featuring
both face-to-face sessions and web-based tutorials, the Course will be delivered
by experienced Computer Officers of ITSC.
Application is open to all administrative and support staff on a first come,
first served basis. The fee of the Course is $500 and course participants
will be awarded a certificate after passing an assessment examination at
the completion of the Course. With a validity period of two years, the certificate
will be recognized by the University as equivalent to passing the IT test
for EO/EA promotion assessment. For detailed information and enrolment, please
