Issue 38, August 14 2003.
To reduce spam (or mass unsolicited e-mail) going to our @cuhk.edu.hk mailboxes, the ITSC has just launched a Spam Filtering Service for all CWEM users. Incoming e-mail to our @cuhk.edu.hk mailboxes will have its IP address matched against worldwide spam blacklists, and if it matches, will be processed according to the option our users choose in their CWEM configuration: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/directory/modify.html. Currently, users can choose among the options "label", "folder" and "reject". a. The "label" option The spam filter option defaults to "label," which means a special label will be inserted into the headers of a suspected spam message. This allows a user to program their e-mail client (e.g. Netscape, Eudora) to look for specific labels, and delete or file away their mail accordingly. b. The "folder" option For instance, Outlook Express users may want to change the option to "folder," which assumes that the final mail destination is mailserv.cuhk.edu.hk and automatically files suspected spam away into a new "spam" folder in the user's mailserv account. The user, after examining the contents of the "spam" folder, can then choose to delete the contents via IMAP or webmail. c. The "reject" option Users who have gained confidence in our spam filter may choose the "reject" option; our mail servers will then reject suspected spam immediately, so it never reaches the user. Details of this new service is at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/app/email/spam.html top
Question: I received an e-mail sent from admin@cuhk.edu.hk
and the e-mail said "My e-mail address will be expiring". What should I do? Answer: This message is not sent from the ITSC
or CUHK. Your e-mail address should still be working. You got this message most probably because your e-mail address was found in
the Outlook Address Book of a computer that has been infected by the computer
worm WORM_MIMAIL. If you suspected that your computer might have been infected
by this virus, please check
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_MIMAIL.A
for the instructions for removing this computer worm. As always, please install a virus scanner on your computer - both at work and
at home. Be sure to set real time scanning on all file extensions and update new
virus pattern files frequently . The virus scanner PC-cillin is a site-license
program (http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/avcentre)
available free for CU staff and students

We have stopped the support for problems/requests sent to xxx-help mailboxes because the web-based system has many advantages over the xxx-help mailbox consultation service. For example, you can always read our reply to all your submitted problems/requests by logging in to the system. And you don't have to save a copy of the solution in your mailbox. Therefore, if you have similar problems/requests again, you can easily get the answer by referring to the system without searching all your mailboxes.
