WBT Community
A "WBT Community" has been established at CUHK since October 2000. The Community provides a communication channel and a support mechanism for teachers using web-based instruction. It aims at fostering web-based teaching development through discussions and the sharing of experience. WBT Community is a self-help tool which is complementary to the courses, programmes and specialised advice offered to the WBT community by the ITSC.

The Community provides - Discussion forums
- A monthly digest summarising the forum discussion threads
- Weekly tips on using WBT tools
- An updated calendar of WBT news and events
- Advanced training and workshops on design tools

All University faculty and staff are welcome to join this Community. Please register on-line at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/wbt

WebCT Courses
Now, at the end of the first teaching term, teachers have the option of continuing to use their current WebCT courses for the second term. If a teacher would like to commence another WebCT course in second term, he/she should apply for it as soon as possible. Further details and an application form are available online at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/wbt

Logic Server Upgrade
The general-purpose UNIX Server (Logic) was upgraded on 18 December 2000. There have been several enhancements to the server as follows:

Server Hardware
The current server was replaced by a faster HP L2000 Enterprise server which is equipped with a PA8500 440 MHz CPU, 512M RAM and 144 GB Ultra2 SCSI hard disks. The operating system was also upgraded from HP-UX 10.20 to 11.0. Users should experience improved system performance as a result of these hardware changes.

Users' Account Details
The default disk quota for users has been extended to 10MB. In addition, the password in the new 'Logic' server has been made the same as the Campus-wide E-mail (Mailserv) password.

Programming Language Enhancements
The language compilers, for example those of C, C++ and scripting languages such as Perl, have been upgraded to their latest versions. It is highly recommended that users re-compile the source code of their programmes with the appropriate compiler to avoid any compatibility problems between different versions of compilers.

Several new programming languages, including Python, PHP and Java Development Kit, were added to 'Logic' during the upgrade. Please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/compenv/logic for more information.

Maintenance Schedule from January 2001 to June 2001
Most of the centrally-managed computer systems need to be shut down regularly for maintenance work. Details of the maintenance schedule from January 2001 to June 2001 have been sent to all departments and various college laboratories for circulation and posting. The maintenance schedule is also available online at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/sys_ava/maint.html and on the CUHK anonymous FTP server, ftp.cuhk.edu.hk, which is located at ftp://ftp.cuhk.edu.hk/cuhk/itsc/maint
