Revoked CWEM Accounts on Computers that Generated Lot of Abnormal Network Traffic on Campus Network

Some of you have recently reported to the ITSC that your CWEM accounts suddenly stopped working. After you used your CWEM account for connecting to the campus network through dialup / ResNet / ClassNet / Broadband VPN services, the connection dropped unexpectedly. If you have a similar experience, in addition to contacting us to obtain new passwords, we urge you to conduct a detailed check of your computer IMMEDIATELY.

In order to safeguard the security and the proper running of the network, we suspend users' CWEM accounts and disable their current network connections when their computers generate a lot of abnormal network traffic on the campus network. In most of the cases, abnormal network traffic is due to a computer virus/worm. Hence, to ensure you can surf happily with the campus network and protect your computer from virus/worm attacks, we urge you to take the following measures to protect your computer.

  1. Install an anti-virus scanner and update its pattern files frequently to ensure that your computer is virus-free

  2. Download appropriate Windows update software from the Microsoft download site (exclusively for Windows users)
  3. Set a secure and strong password for your computer (especially for Windows NT/2000/XP users)

The Campus-wide E-mail System Unavailable between 00:00, Oct 12 and 23:59, Oct 12

In order to enhance the performance of the Campus-wide E-mail System (CWEM), we are going to upgrade the file server and the disk storage of the system during the following period:
From: 00:00, October 12, 2003 (Sunday)
To: 23:59, October 12, 2003 (Sunday)

During the upgrading period,

  1. Neither the system nor your mailboxes can be accessed. In other words, you will not be able to send or check e-mails during the upgrading period.

  2. The system will still be able to receive incoming e-mails; however, it will not deliver e-mails to their target mailboxes until the upgrade is completed. That is, there will be no loss of incoming e-mails to the system during the upgrading period.

  3. The upgrade does not affect other departmental e-mail servers or services.

  4. The upgrade does not affect e-mail re-direction from XXXX@cuhk.edu.hk to other e-mail servers on campus.

  5. Thousands of incoming e-mails may reach and be stored in our server during the upgrading period. Therefore, please allow time for the system to deliver all the email to their target mailboxes after the upgrade is completed.

Should you have any enquiries, please submit them to ITSC Electronic HelpDesk at https://helpdesk.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk/group/postmaster.
