Questions? Contact Electronic HelpDesk for Assistance!
The home page of the Electronic Help Desk http://helpdesk.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk has been redesigned with additional functions to provide you with a better layout and an easy-to-access interface.

For example, a Quick Link section connects you to other useful websites in the ITSC while a Top 10 FAQs section answers the most frequently asked questions. To save time, please check these pages before submitting enquiries.

Should you not find what you need, you may submit an enquiry through the Electronic HelpDesk. To submit your enquiry, login with your Campus-wide E-mail System (Mailserv) computing id and password. Guest login is also available but you should preferably submit your computing id so that the ITSC support staff can follow up your enquiry if necessary.

In addition, there is an enquiry tracking system for you to inquire about the status of a previously submitted request or problem.

Recommendations for CUHK Desktop Computer Systems
Most members of the University community need access to desktop technology that can run contemporary operating systems and application software. To help you in determining what sort of desktop system is required in our campus environment and especially for University administration purposes, the ITSC has published some guidelines for CUHK desktop computer systems. Visit http://mcas.csc.cuhk.edu.hk/mcas/hwsw/index.html for details.

This web page provides you with the minimum recommended configurations for desktop systems so that you can know whether it is time to upgrade your desktop computer system. It also provides you with recommendations on purchasing a new desktop system. A link to the University Software Standards for administrative units is also available on this page.

What to Do If You Hear the Fire Alarm in the User Area
We regret about the recent false fire alarms of the smoke detection system at the Pi-Chiu Building. The Estate Management Office will look into the matter and implement further precautions in preventing, as much as possible, false alarms from happening again. Nevertheless, may we remind you that whenever there is a fire alarm, please do follow the evacuation procedure below and leave the building immediately unless you're told that the fire alarm is being tested.

Evacuation Procedure:

  • Don't bother about your personal belongings
  • Proceed to the nearest exit to leave the building (do not use the lift)
  • Once you are out of the building, you can go to the assembly point -- Main Exit of Pi-Chiu Building Facing University Mall.)
  • Do not re-enter the building until it is declared safe by the on-site Security personnel
  • You can refer to the information about fire escape routes which is posted in each computer laboratory for the location of emergency exits and the assembly point. For any enquiries, please contact ITSC at http://helpdesk.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk or e-mail to itsc-help@cuhk.edu.hk

    'Theory' Server Upgrade
The Data Library and Academic Applications Software Server (Theory) was upgraded on 4th January 2001. There have been several enhancements to the server as follows:

    Server Operating System
The operating system was upgraded from HP-UX 10.20 to 11.0. A complete set of the latest HP-UX 11.0 reference materials can be found at http://docs.hp.com/hpux/os/11.0/ .

    Applications Enhancements
The SAS, Mathematica and SPSS application programmes have been upgraded to their latest versions.

    Programming Language Enhancements
The language compiler, Fortran 90, has been upgraded to its latest version. It is highly recommended that users re-compile the source code of their programmes with the appropriate compiler to avoid any compatibility problems between different versions of compilers.

Utilities such as Pico and Pine were also upgraded. Please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/compenv/datalib for more information on server upgrade.

TIP: Use of the Mail Forward Function
On the Campus-wide E-mail System, the file .forward informs the server the address where mail should further be forwarded, just like the divert/ forward function on your mobile phones. This function is especially useful if you have more than one mailbox. For example, suppose s654321@mailserv.cuhk.edu.hk is the mailbox provided by ITSC and yourname@dept.cuhk.edu.hk is a mailbox provided by your department.

To use the forward function, a valid destination address has to be supplied. If you want to forward all mails from s654321@mailserv.cuhk.edu.hk to yourname@dept.cuhk.edu.hk for you to pick up, you can set the address "yourname@dept.cuhk.edu.hk" in the .forward file. Please refer to the web page at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/app/email for setting details.

However, never set the ITSC username s654321@mailserv.cuhk.edu.hk as one of the forwarding addresses in the E-mail system. Incoming messages would then "loop" repeatedly and none of the addresses would receive any mail. In addition, an incorrect setting would overload the e-mail server and cause delay in the delivery of mail. All the campus users would be affected. Therefore, please pay special attention to the setting of forwarding addresses.
