CU Link - Allows you to Access the University Services Conveniently
Besides serving as a University identity card, CU Link is also an all-in-one function card that allows you to access various University services in a simple and convenient way. CU Link can perform multiple functions because of its built-in microprocessor chip which employs MULTOS (MULTi-application Operating System), one of the latest smart card system technologies. With the successful issuance of CU Link in 1999, many applications have been subsequently developed. The following applications were made possible by the joint efforts of the Information Technology Services Centre, various college offices and Postgraduate Hall Complex.

1.1 Hostel Air-Conditioner Control System
To encourage power conservation with hostel, air-conditioning use is now run on a user-pay basis through CU Link. When you want to use the air-conditioner in your room, you only need to insert your CU Link into the interface device that is installed in the room. In this application, CU Link is used to store credits for air-conditioning use. Now you can buy the credits from the corresponding College Office (including Chung Chi College, New Asia College, United College and Postgraduate Hall Complex), and soon you can buy them with Mondex from the unmanned top-up machine that is available in the hostel. This application has also been extended to hostel laundry use.

1.2 e-Ticketing for College Assemblies
Soon you will no longer have to print tickets for attending college assemblies and activities. Through e-Ticketing, you only need to register for the assemblies or activities on the Web. Instead of showing your ticket, you present your CU Link to validate your attendance at the venue. If required by the event organizer, you may also need to 'download' a ticket to your CU Link through a computer connected to a smart-card reader. This application is now undergoing testing in various colleges.

1.3 Reset Passwords using CU Link card
In the past, if you forgot your passwords and found that the Consultation Room was closed, you needed to visit us again in order to collect your passwords. Now, you can reset the passwords yourselves by using your CU Link anytime in the User Area. A computer with a smart-card reader is now set up in the User Area of Pi Chiu Building for you to reset your passwords. After inserting your CU Link card into the computer, the system will prompt you to enter your CU Link pin number and a new password. For successful submission, the new password will be effective on the following day.

There are still a number of application projects under development and we hope this smart card technology can help to further increase the efficiency of the University.

Grade Capturing System
The Grade Capturing System was successfully utilized by the teaching staff and the examination panel starting from the last teaching term. In this system, students' grades are inputted to the staff's computer and transmitted to the Registry's database. Moreover, staff can make changes to the grades before confirming with the Registry the inputted grades so that adjustment is made possible.

To prevent unauthorized entry, ITSC has implemented some security measures in this system to ensure only authorized staff can access the system. However, staff is always advised to keep a hard copy in case of any accidental system breakdown.

Additional ClassNet Access Points in Pi Chiu Building and Chung Chi Teaching Block
To facilitate your teaching needs during class and tutorials, we have always been committed to providing more internet access points on campus. In recent issues of ITSC Digest, you can that find lots of sites, especially newly renovated buildings, have been equipped with these network access points. Now, the network is further extended to the classrooms in Pi Chiu Building and the 4/F of Chung Chi College Phase V. Please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/classnet for the latest developments.

ITSC Training Programmes
Many of you have used WebCT to assist your course teaching. However, you may not be able to attend the WebCT training courses at ITSC due to time conflicts. Now, you can learn this tool on-line at your own pace. Two on-line courses for learning WebCT are now available. The basic course gives you an overview of the tool, and the basic techniques in posting course materials and managing the course. The advanced course provides you with a valuable opportunity for enhancing your WebCT course even if you have little experience in desktop publishing. It gives you tips for designing your course banner, instructions for adding wallpaper, help for getting course statistics and answers to your WebCT questions . In this course, there is also a demonstration video inside each topic for you to watch.

If you prefer to attend instructor-based training, don't miss the February - April workshops on MS Office and Photoshop. In this series, new features of Chinese Outlook 2000, Word 2000 and Excel 2000 are covered. In addition, we continue to offer PowerPoint 97 and Excel 97 to meet your needs.
