As
part of a continuing effort to fight against computer
viruses spread through e-mail, ITSC has installed
an anti-virus package, InterScan VirusWall from
TrendMicro (the developer of OfficeScan and PC
Cillin), in the CWEM. Now, any message containing
a suspected virus will be rejected; that is, it
will not be delivered to users' mailboxes in CWEM.
When a message is rejected, both the sender and
receiver will receive a message sent by CWEM Virus
Scanner (abuse@cuhk.edu.hk)
. This message specifies the name, or subject
line, of the rejected attachment. In general,
only the attachment will be rejected and the content
will be sent to a receiver's mailbox as usual.
The functions of message scanning and rejection
are totally automatic, thus human scanning is
not involved, i.e. users' e-mails will not be
scanned or opened for inspection by a person.
Please note, however, this does not mean that
CWEM is free from viruses. We still encourage
you to take the following measures to protect
your computer.
- Install
a virus scanner for your computer - at work
and at home. PC-cillin 2000 is a site-license
program available free for CU staff and
students
- Set
real time scanning on all file extensions.
- Update
new virus pattern files frequently and never
open files without scanning them.
- Do
not install more than one virus scanner on your
computer
Below
are sample messages about rejected attachments.
Message to the
sender :
From: CWEM Virus Scanner (abuse@cuhk.edu.hk)
Subject: Virus Alert
Dear
SL:
The
CWEM Virus Scanner received a virus email with
your name as the sender to tyche@cuhk.edu.hk.
In order to stop the virus from spreading, the
email is sent but with the virus removed.
We
understand that some worms/viruses use a false
identity, so there is a chance you did not really
sent the email. In this case, please accept our
sincere apology and disregard this message.
However,
if you did send the message then your computer
might have been infected by virus. In this case,
please install a virus scanner in your PC and
then scan and remove the virus. If you are a student
or staff of the Chinese University of Hong Kong,
please take note that the University has licensed
an antivirus scanner for all staff and students.
Please check the CU Antivirus Centre at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/avcentre
for more information.
This
message is automatically generated by the CWEM
Virus Scanner when a virus file is detected. Only
the infected file is removed and no further action
is taken. During the scanning process, human inspection
is not involved.

any enquiries, please send to abuse@cuhk.edu.hk

Message to the
receiver :
From: CWEM Virus Scanner (abuse@cuhk.edu.hk)
Subject: Virus Alert
Dear
TYChe:
SL
has sent you a mail message (on Mar 6) with an
attachment (File: hello) contains virus. In order
to protect you and stop the virus from spreading,
the CWEM Virus Scanner has removed the virus.
Attached please find the content of the mail message.
Please
beware that some worms/viruses use a false identity,
so there is a chance that SL did not really sent
the email. Still, we shall notify them shortly,
just in case they are really infected.
The
CWEM Virus Scanner blocks virus attached with
e-mail from delivering to your mailbox. It does
not block virus from entering your PC through
other means, therefore, you are recommended to
protect your PC by installing a virus scanner.
If you are a student or staff of the Chinese University
of Hong Kong, please take note that the University
has licensed an antivirus scanner for all staff
and students. Please check the CU Antivirus Centre
at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/avcentre
for more information.
