1. Make a connection through the Campus Network

The following settings are only applicable for access to the CUHK News Server (news.cuhk.edu.hk). Before setting up your News account, make sure you are accessing through a CUHK network connection, that is,
- any network connections on campus (like departmental LAN, computer laboratories and etc); or
- a VPN connection over the ResNet, ClassNet and wireless LAN
- a off-campus VPN connection over subscribed broadband service.
Otherwise, you are UNABLE to make a successful access.

2. Set up the Host and the Personal Information
The settings in the following refer to the use of Outlook Express

i. Start your Outlook Express
ii. Under Tools menu, select Accounts

iii. Click Add button and select News option. An Internet Connection Wizard will be shown.

iv. On Your Name page, enter your Name in the Display name and click Next button

On Internet E-mail Address page, enter your e-mail address in E-mail address and click Next button

On Internet News Server Names page, enter news.cuhk.edu.hk and enter Finish to save the changes. Click Close to quit the wizard

The system will then prompt you whether you like to subscribe newsgroup on the current account. You can either add newsgroups now by replying yes or add them later by replying no.

3. Subscribe to newsgroups in the CUHK News Server
The settings in the following are using Outlook Express as an example

i. Open Outlook Express

ii. Select “Subscribe to Newsgroups…” under the title “Newsgroups”

iii. A Newsgroup Subscriptions box will be prompted. Choose the news server “news.cuhk.edu.hk” in the Account box. All newsgroups belonging to the specified server will be shown in the “Newsgroup” box. Type the name of your preferred newsgroup in the blank box (accept full name or keywords) under the instruction “Display newsgroups which contain”.

iv. Double click the name of your preferred newsgroup(s) appeared in the “Newsgroup” box. A folder icon will appear beside each chosen newsgroup.

v. Click “OK” or “Go to” button to finish the subscription process. If you choose the “OK” button, the Newsgroups Subscription box will be closed and you are returned to the main page. If the “Go to” button is chosen, you are moved to the newly added newsgroup directly.

vi. The addresses of the subscribed newsgroups are shown in the left-handed “Folders” box. You can access your favourite newsgroups in a click.
