Before you post your message in the newsgroup, please note the following,

1. CUHK newsgroups are created not only for campus events discussion, but it is also a free forum for ideas and opinions of topics related to the University. Some newsgroups are also dedicated for specific purposes (course discussion or announcement). Any posting outside the specified scope is not allowed. When using the newsgroup, users must observe the rules set forth in the "Computer Network - Policies and Guidelines on Access and Usage - ITSC User Reference No. RGEN002.

2. Sending forged e-mail or posting forged message in newsgroups are strictly forbidden (section 6.7 of "Computer Network - Policies and Guidelines on Access and Usage - ITSC User Reference No. RGEN002).

3. Cancellation of a posting in newsgroups other than one's own is strictly prohibited. It is regarded as a serious infraction of ITSC policy and will result in temporary, THREE months, or permanent loss of ITSCnet access privilege as documented in 9.2.3 of "Computer Network - Policies and Guidelines on Access and Usage.

However, for public interest, the ITSC will cancel postings which carry worms/viruses or postings which are regarded as harassment. Accordingly, such cancellation will be announced on the corresponding forum to update the readers.

4. Harassing, defamatory or pornographic material may not be sent via electronic mail or posted to electronic bulletin boards, web pages and news groups (section 6.7 of "Computer Network - Policies and Guidelines on Access and Usage - ITSC User Reference No. RGEN002)..

5. Accountability in communication is encouraged. Reserved names such as names of departments, units and University officers should not be used in one's signature if he/she is not the authorized representative. In addition, names chosen should be decent and its content must not harass or embarrass other person. Details can be read at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/about/alias.html.

6. Department/unit head/chairman, teachers and student organization presidents may apply for a newsgroup for their departments/units/course/organization. Application form is available at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/apponline/form .

7. Apart from department / student organization / course newsgroups, there are some 'cuhk.*' newsgroups created for specific topic discussion. They are,

cuhk.ads
Non-commercial advertisement for members of CUHK
cuhk.comp
Discussion on computer-related topics
cuhk.comp.multimedia
Discussion on multimedia-related topics
cuhk.comp.resnet
Discussion on ResNet related topics
cuhk.forum
A free forum for ideas and opinions related to the CUHK
cuhk.research
Discussion on research projects
cuhk.test
For posting "test messages"
Moreover, cuhk.itsc.forum is the general place for discussion about ITSC.

8. Crossposting is a feature of Usenet and it is useful to post articles which are related to different topics. However, this feature is sometimes abused. Articles with irrelevant topics maybe crossposted to a large number of newsgroups. Modern news servers often have filters to filter out articles abusively crossposted.
In the University, cuhk.* are supposed to be propagated between news servers in CUHK. However, most of articles posted by outsiders were with unrelated topics. Starting from Jan 18 1999, the cross-posting to cuhk.* newsgroups from non-CUHK servers were prohibited. The articles can still be read from other non-cuhk.* newsgroups if they are cross-posted to.

9. When posting to a newsgroup, please ensure that your computer clock is correctly set so that other readers can follow your posting easily. The ITSC will warn or discipline users who deliberately set their clocks forward significantly (e.g. more than 15 minutes) without good reasons, because such a practice is a nuisance to many readers who want to read the latest Usenet articles.
