1. What is Telnet?
Telnet (Telecommunication Network) is a network protocol used on the Internet or local area network (LAN) connections. It is a common way to remotely control Web servers.
Through Telnet, you can establish a connection across the Internet from your PC to a server on the network. This enables you to control the server and communicate with other servers on the network. Usually, you need to have a computer account on the remote host in order to make a connection to it by entering a valid username and password.

2. Security Concerns
For security concerns, we encourage you to remote access our computer systems through a secure shell. A free licensed programme, SSH, is available for CUHK staff and students to download.
You can telnet to a remote host from our servers. However, if you want to telnet to anyone of the ITSC hosts from a non-CUHK host, you must access it through a VPN connection over your network.
