1. Introduction

The Campus network was set up in late 1992. Its purpose is to facilitate fast and easy information exchange and resources sharing.

The backbone technologies have been changed from FDDI to ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and from ATM to Gigabit Ethernet over these years. The Gigabit Ethernet backbone network is composed of Cisco 6500/3750 series Layer 3 Switches and Cisco 7600/7200 series Routers. Connections between switches can therefore be made at the speed of up to 10Gbps.

The fast speed enables teaching videos, seminars, and conferences can be televised - live or in recorded modes - to and from different locations on campus via video severs installed at the Centre.

2. Connected Campus – Methods of Connection

2.1 ResNet
The ResNet , Residence Network, has been available since Jan 20, 1997. The ResNet connection from each hostel to the Campus Network Backbone is a 1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet link and each user enjoys up to 100Mbps connection speed, with 10/100BaseT technology, for his/her access to the Campus Network and the Internet.

2.2 ClassNet
Starting from September 1998, we can get access to the internet at lecture theatres, classrooms, libraries and public areas using the ClassNet. It employs Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology which ensures only authorized users can access the network. The ClassNet connection is similar to the ResNet connection, which provides high-performance communications for all ClassNet users.

2.3 Wireless LAN
Since September 2000, most of the open areas on the campus have been equipped with 802.11b wireless LAN access points. Through wireless LAN connections, staff and students can move with their laptops freely in areas like Chung Chi Tang, "Circle Square" and University Mall for accessing the campus network and the Internet. Wireless LAN connects to the Internet through ClassNet.

2.4 CUHKNet
To access restricted sites like the University Library resources, CUHK Newsgroup, etc OFF campus, simply connect to the CUHKNet after connecting to the Internet via a public ISP network.

2.5 Remote Departments
Remote departmental LANs such as Prince of Wales Hospital, Taipo Hospital, Lek Yuen Health Centre, Eye Hospital, School of Continuous Studies, School of Law and MBA Programme are connected to Backbone through Metro Ethernet link, and remote routers.
