In recent years, the dialup lines usage has kept decreasing. This may be due to the popularity of the broadband service provided by ResNet/ClassNet/wireless LAN connections on campus and also other public Internet service providers at home.

In order to save money for a better resource allocation, the ITSC will cut some unused lines and keep the following line numbers to meet the demand

Dial-up No. No. of Lines Max. Connection Time per session Type of Users Implementation of Dial-Up Access Quota System
29330800 46 2 hours Staff and Students Yes
29330900 23 2 hours Staff Card Holders only Yes
29328000 removed 1 hour Staff and Students Yes
29330633 23 1 hour Staff and Students No
29330733 23 1 hour Staff Card Holders only No

The adjustment will take place on 1 January 2009, during which there will be a temporary service outage.

Note:

  • All have PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) support with PAP (Password Authentication Protocol), SLIP (Serial-Line Internet Protocol) and connection to ITSC Computer Systems. Both 29330900 and 29330733 support IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) additionally. Visit V.90 upgrade status page for the support to 56K V.90 standard.

  • To prevent non-CUHK or unauthorized users from logging in our systems over the telephone lines, you will be prompt to enter your Campus-wide E-mail System (CWEM) computing id and password after a successful connection.

  • Refer to the dial-up quota scheme for details.
