Starting from Feb 22, 1999, the name server 137.189.6.1 will be decommissioned from serving the campus.
What are the impacts?
To most users, there is NO impact at all. It is because ITSC has been asking users to use other name servers (137.189.192.3, 137.189.196.3) a couple of years ago. Only a small group of users who are still using our recommendation three to four years ago might have trouble connecting to other computers.
Am I in trouble?
Please look at our guide to set up network connectivity on Windows. In "2.4: Server Type, 3. TCP Setting ... dialog box," did you configure 137.189.6.1? Most people did not, and they skip the rest of the article. If you did, please configure the name servers again according to the directions there. If your network connectivity is maintained by your LAN administrator, he/she will check the LAN configuration for you so you will have nothing to worry about.
I am a LAN administrator
Are your PCs getting their name servers from DHCP? If yes, just make sure CSC is doing the DHCP service for your LAN, and relax. It is because we are using the new name servers already. If you are using your own DHCP server, make sure you don't serve out 137.189.6.1 to DHCP clients. Unless you have better name servers, we recommend you to use 137.189.192.3 and 137.189.196.3.
I have Unix workstations
You better ask your system/network administrator to check out /etc/resolv.conf. If you run you own name server(s), you can put them there; otherwise we will suggest you use 137.189.192.3 and 137.189.196.3.
