Internet Access off Campus

A. Free Wi-Fi Hotspot Access

Under the CUHK Wi-Fi Hotspot Partnership Programme, you can get a free Internet Wi-Fi services at all the hotspots provided by two local commercial Internet Service Providers (PCCW and Y5ZONE) and Eduroam.

  • PCCW / Y5ZONE: Hundreds of hotspots over Hong Kong, such as 24-hour convenient stores and shopping malls.
  • Eduroam: eight tertiary educational institutions in Hong Kong, as well as other education institutions over the world, e.g. UK, Australia and Japan.

Details can be read at https://wifipartners.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk

B. University VPN and Dial-up Access

University staff and students can access the campus network using their laptops at home or while travelling via a VPN connection (over an available broadband service) or a dial-up line.

For both connections, you need to have your Campus-wide E-mail System (CWEM) password ready for authentication.

  • CUHKNet - using a VPN connection via public ISPs network
  • Dial-Up - using a modem over a telephone line

These VPN and dial-up connections allow you to access restricted sites, like the databases in the University Library System, CUHK news service, CUHK Anti-virus Centre and etc when you are away from campus.
