How to set up a VPN Client

Notice

  • Effective from 1 Sept 2008, you can use a single VPN server name, vpn.cuhk.edu.hk, for any ResNet/ClassNet/CUHKNet connection. And previous server names, like ipsec-classnet.cuhk.edu.hk still work.
  • Max. Connection Time Per Session: 8 hours with 1 hour idle time out. You can make the connection again when the session expires.

To set up a VPN client onto your computer, simply follow the two steps below.

Step 1

Prepare the following before setting up VPN clients,
a. a computer installed with LAN card
b. your CWEM computing ID and password

Step 2

Click below for Windows L2TP IPSec Protocol setup procedures for:

  1. Windows Vista (English)(Chinese)
  2. Windows XP (English)(Chinese)
  3. Windows 2000 (English)(Chinese)

Other VPN Connection methods for:

  1. Mac OS X 10.3
  2. Mac OS X 10.4
  3. Mac OS X 10.5
  4. Windows Mobile
  5. iPhone and iPod Touch with firmware 2.x
  6. Fedora Linux 8
  7. Ubuntu Linux version 7.10 (gusty) / 8.04 (hardy) / Debian 4.0

Details of VPN Servers:

  • Hostname: vpn.cuhk.edu.hk (for all VPN services)
  • Max connection time per session: 8 hours with 1 hour idle time out

Reminder:
The ITSC would suspend your VPN access to the Campus Network and disable your current network connections when a huge amount of abnormal network traffic was generated from your computer.
