NOTE |
- To access VPN service,
- Please check the installation of your network card before setting up a connection.
- Effective from 1 Sept 2008, you can use a single VPN server name, vpn.cuhk.edu.hk, for any ResNet/ClassNet/CUHKNet connection. And previous server names, like ipsec-classnet.cuhk.edu.hk still work.

Please follow the steps below to establish a VPN connection.
- Create a VPN Client
- Edit a VPN Connection
- Connect to CUHK VPN
I.
Create a VPN Client
1. Click Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center, click Setup a connection or network on the left. |

2. Choose Connect to a workplace, and then click Next. |

3. Choose Use my Internet connection (VPN). |

4. Input the following.
Internet address:
vpn.cuhk.edu.hk
Destination name:
CUHK VPN
5. Check the box Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later.
Then click Next. |

6. Enter your Campus-Wide E-Mail (CWEM) Computing ID, and then click Create. |

7. Click Close when the window shows "The connection is ready to use". |

II. Edit a VPN Connection
1. Click Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center, then click Manage network connections at the left.
Right-click the connection that we have just created, click Properties. |

2. In the General tab, confirm the address is correct:
vpn.cuhk.edu.hk
*** For Netvigator users:
Please select Dial another connection first and select Netvigator from the list box. |

3. In the Security tab, choose Advanced (custom settings) and click Settings. |

4. For Data encryption, choose Require encryption (disconnect if server declines).
Choose Allow these protocols for Logon security, and check the following boxes:
* Unencrypted password (PAP)
* Microsoft CHAP Version 2
(MS-CHAP v2)
Then click OK. |

5. Click Yes to confirm the changes (if necessary). |

6. Click Networking tab:
- Under the caption Type of VPN, select L2TP IPSec VPN.
- Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
Then click the IPSec Settings... |

7. Choose Use preshared key for authentication and enter ipsec-vpn into the Key field.
Then click OK. |

III.
Connect to CUHK VPN
1. Click Start > Connect To,then double-click the connection that we have just created. |

2. Input your Campus-wide E-mail System (CWEM) Computing ID and password.
Click Connect. |

3. When the window shows the connection has been successfully established, click Close. |

|
*** For the first time the connection is successfully established, the following window will appear.
Click Public location for the sake of online security. |
