1. Overview of CUHK Wireless LAN

A 54-Mbps wireless LAN has been installed in the campus. It allows a wireless (radio frequency) connection to a local area network. The wireless LAN employs IEEE 802.11a; 802.11b and 802.11g standards. The wireless LAN operates in 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz frequency bands with Aruba Network’s enhanced roaming features. The roaming features allow Notebook computers or mobile devices connected to the wireless LAN to move from one access point to another without losing the connection. And the wireless LAN can support more than 2000 concurrent users.

Smartphone users should temporarily disable mobile data services such as GPRS, EDGE, UMTS or HSDPA provided by your mobile operator. This helps to avoid the associated service charge from your mobile operator caused by the accidental change of Internet access from the campus free Wi-Fi connections to mobile data services when the Wi-Fi signal becomes weak or inaccessible. For details of how to disable your mobile data services, please contact your mobile operator.
