This page is basically a how-to guide, helping you to grasp some ideas about various facilities and services that are provided by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Information Technology Service Centre.

1. Computer Account Management

a. Differences between CWEM and ITSC PC LAN Accounts

Users should mind that these two accounts are with different passwords and used for different purposes. CWEM (Campus-wide E-mail System) account is for using CUHK e-mail service, VPN and modem services (for internet access), iHome (personal homepage service) and also MyCUHK. On the other hand, ITSC PC LAN Account is used for accessing computers in User Areas, some college, faculty and student hostel computer laboratories.

b. Change / Forgot Password

To change the ITSC PC LAN password, you should first login a computer in Users Areas or one of the connected computer laboratories. Then double-click the “Change PC LAN Password” icon on the desktop and enter your new password in the pop-up window.

c. Ask for more computer accounts

Users may request more computer accounts, as well as other services, when necessary. Accounts and services include e-mail, ITSC PC LAN services, CUHK Bulletin Board, CUHK hostname services, etc. You should fill in the corresponding application form and hand it in to ITSC.

2. Internet Access


a. Ways to Connect CUHK Campus Network (pdf document)

  • On Campus
    1. ResNet - Sudent Hostels
    2. ClassNet - Lecture Theaters, Classrooms, Libraries and Public Areas
    3. CUHK Wi-Fi Service - share the same hotspots with ClassNet, and plus student canteens.
  • Off Campus
    1. CUHKNet - a Virtual Private Network (VPN) over a non-CUHK connection to access restricted CUHK sites through a broadband connection
    2. CUHK Wi-Fi Hotpot Partnership Programme - over thousands of hotspots in Hong Kong (PCCW and Y5Zone), and universities over the world (Eduroam)

 

b. Get Connected with VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Campus users must have a VPN client ready on their computers when connecting through the network located at student hostels, classrooms, libraries and public areas. VPN also allows CUHK staff and students to connect to restricted CUHK sites via their own subscribed public ISP network. Since different operating systems have their own setup procedures, please refer to our webpages for details. But before the setup, you should make sure you have the LAN card installed in your computer and prepare your CWEM computing I.D. and password for the signup.



3. CUHK E-mail Service


a. Send and Receive E-mails

There are a few ways to send and receive e-mails in your Campus-wide E-mail System (CWEM) account. You can either login WebMail (a web interface to CWEM system) at http://webmail.cuhk.edu.hk, or use an IMAP/POP supported e-mail programme, such as Outlook Express and Netscape Messenger, to accomplish the process.

 

b. Change Personal Information / Set identity

You can change your name, address and signature that people see when they read and reply to your e-mail. To do this, you can login at http://webmail.cuhk.edu.hk. Click Options from the main menu bar at the top, and then choose Personal Information. Next, click Edit your identities, enter the required information and click Create to confirm the change.

c. Change E-mail Alias and E-mail Drop Box

While your e-mail address is defaulted as (your computing ID)@cuhk.edu.hk, you may change it into alias@cuhk.edu.hk, (e.g. abc@cuhk.edu.hk) and reset your e-mail drop box, where your e-mails are finally received (e.g. 123@hotmail.com). You may do this through MyCUHK (personal account) or Login Page (departmental/project/student society account).

For MyCUHK users please click on the “Services” tab after login, and then you will find a little box called “My E-mail Alias and E-mail Drop Box” on the right-hand side.

d. Forward E-mails

To forward your e-mails to another e-mail account, you may login CWEM system at http://webmail.cuhk.edu.hk and click “Forwarding” from the main menu bar at the top. After the E-mail Forwarding form is opened, select “Set e-mail forwarding to:” and enter the forwarding address in the box beside. And click Submit to apply the changes.

e. Write a Vacation Notice to e-mail senders

You can do this by activating the function of Vacation Auto-Rely. Login CWEM system at http://webmail.cuhk.edu.hk and click “Vacation” from the main menu bar at the top. After the Vacation Auto-Rely form is opened, select “Activate vacation notice” and type your message in the box below. And click Submit to apply the changes.

Commonly-used Tools

 

a. Browse your applications through MyCUHK

MyCUHK is a one-stop platform to access various services provided by CUHK. You can check various applications by clicking the tags, such as WebMail, WebCT (an e-Learning tool), Online Directory and Course Registration, etc. You can even customize the layout of MyCUHK by adding tags and channels to it. To do this, just click Customize at the right-hand side after login.

b. e-Learning Tools

WebCT is the most common e-Learning platform used by staff and students. Your course list is found on the front page after you have logged in. You can download teaching materials from your teachers, hand in assignments or upload useful materials or hold a discussion for the whole class. Other e-Learning tools, like CU Forum and Moodle, are also commonly used.

c. CUHK Root CA Certificate
Many CUHK websites, e.g. MyCUHK, WebMail and CUHK e-Payment System, have employed a digital certificate, i.e. CUHK Root CA Certificate, to ensure the safe and secure flow of information that helps to assure you are not visiting a fradulent CUHK website. If you have not installed the certificate, the "Security Alert" message will be prompted when you are getting access to the required pages. To avoid the inconvenience and to ensure that they are genuine CUHK digital certificate, please install CUHK Root Certificate Authority (CA) Certificate into your browser at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/ca/usage.html#root.

5. User Area


a. User Areas are computer laboratories which are open to all University staff and students. The two user areas are located in Room 130-133 of Pi Ch'iu Building and Room 103 of Wong Foo Yuan Building. You can use the PC LAN services to check e-mails, browse the web and do many other things. Other services are also available, including scanning services, consultation service in the Consultation Room and having group discussions in the Discussion Room and many more.

 

b. Datalocker

Every user is granted 50MB to save the files in Datalocker. In User Areas and other connected computer laboratories, please save your files in Datalocker through folder "My Document" in "Home". At home or in other places, you can access your files in Datalocker through File Transfer (FTP) Service.

6. Services provided by ITSC


a. Free Download Area

All CUHK staff and students can download a copy of the following licensed software and use them on their own computers, i.e. Trend Micro PC-Cillin, SSH Secure Shell, CKC 2002 Chinese Input Method and Sun Microsystems StarOffice.

 

b. CUHK FTP Server

You may also download useful software and documents from the CUHK FTP Server, such as WS_FTP and Redhat.

 

c. CUHK Newsgroup

Our news server is news.cuhk.edu.hk. You can access it via Outlook Express through the Campus Network with a VPN connection. You may also apply for a newsgroup by completing the corresponding form at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/app/news.html#apply.

 

d. CUHK Bulletin Board

Users can share their ideas on CUHK Bulletin Board. You can apply for an account and freely view, create or reply posts on the Board.

 

e. CU Net- TV

Selected Cable TV channels are available on campus to support teaching, learning and other work-related activities. With a desktop PC installed with appropriate viewers (e.g. Microsoft Windows Media Player), users can view programmes on real time basis.

 

f. iHome

iHome is a web server which is used by all staff and students to publish personal homepages and "web-ready" video or audio clips to facilitate teaching and learning. The address of your homepage is http://ihome.cuhk.edu.hk/~your_computing_id. You may publish your webpages or transfer files to the server with a FTP programme. Please login with your computing ID and CWEM password.

7. IT Learning and Tests

a. Training Courses

ITSC has organized different computer education programmes, both self-paced learning and instructor-based, to all University staff and students. You can register through ITSC Training Course Registration System.

 

b. Student IT Competence Programme (Students only)

Every student has to pass the IT Proficiency Test before graduation. You may register for the learning courses, both instructor-led and self-learning, to familiar yourself with the test content. Once ready, you should book a test session at Online Booking System. It is strongly advised that you sit the test in the first year of study. Multiple attempts are allowed.
