GEN003 Computing Services and Facilities at User Area QUICK START GUIDE
Version 1.4 December 2007

1. Introduction

A large pool of PCs, maintained by the Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC), are netted in a Novell Network. They facilitate PC software application and furnish access points to computing, networking and information resources on campus and on the Internet. These personal computers are located in the User Area on the 1/F of Pi Ch'iu Building and Room 103 of Wong Foo Yuan Building. In addition, the User Area is also furnished with high-tech facilities for multi-media applications development, optical mark scanning, colour and laser printing, text and image scanning, and user self-paced learning.

2. Policy

Before having access to the User Area, you are advised to read the rules and regulations posted at the entrance of the laboratory. These regulations can also be read on-line at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/about/cond.html.

3. Computing Resources

The Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) provides the following computer facilities to meet your research and teaching needs.

3.1 Computing Resources for Research

  1. Numeric-intensive Computing System (Origin)
  2. Linux Cluster (Organon)
  3. Memory-Intensive Computing Server (Orphin)

3.2 Computing Resources for Teaching

4. Campus Network (Internet) Applications

You can make access to the following network services through the personal computers in the User Area.

  1. Campus-wide E-mail System (Mailserv)
  2. CUHK Directory Service
  3. CU Forum
  4. Library On-line Catalogue Access
  5. Computer Systems Access (Telnet)
  6. File Transfer Service (FTP)
  7. Newsgroups
  8. World Wide Web (WWW)
  9. WebCT
  10. Moodle
  11. CU Net-TV
  12. Web-based Bulletin Board
  13. CUHK Personal Hostname Service

You can also access the above services through any computer that has a network connection to the campus backbone network. The connection could be via a departmental LAN, the Residence Network (ResNet), the classroom network (ClassNet) or a modem device. Details can be found at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/network/ .

5. Multi-media Facility

To support the use of computer and multi-media systems for teaching in the University and to facilitate the development of multi-media applications, the User Area is also equipped with the following facilities,

5.1 Multi-media Classrooms

Four computer-equipped classrooms (Training Room I, I, III & IV) have been set up with high-resolution multi-media projectors for faculty or any unit who want to teach interactive computer-based class.

5.2 Multi-media Applications Authoring Workstation

The multimedia workstations are located in the 2 User Areas, room 130-133 Pi Ch'iu Building and room 103 Wong Foo Yuan Building . Details can be found at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/compenv/userarea/multiws.htm.

5.3 Scanner

You can scan your picture, data or text (both English and Chinese characters) into computer for further processing.

6.1 Seminars

Seminars are held regularly to let you get familiar with our computer systems and services. Details of the information can be read at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/training.

6.2 User Documents

A series of users references and quick start guides have been composed on the most popular services, facilities and applications software. These documents can also be read on-line at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/publications/userdoc.

6.3 ITSC Digest

ITSC Digest is an online bi-weekly newsletter that keeps you informed of ITSC latest services and development. Subscription and other details can be obtained at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/digest.

6.4 Announcements

You will be informed about our latest development and services through the following channels,

7.2 Electronic HelpDesk

9. Auxiliary Services

9.1 Optical Mark Reading Services

Through the Optical Mark Reader, we now provide 2 OMR scanners, Pearson NCS OpScan 8 and Kodak i160. They are located at Room 133D of Pi Ch¡¦iu User Area. Details can be read at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/compenv/userarea/output/omr.
