Advantages
of having Virtual Private
Network (VPN) technology implemented on the
campus network.
- To
moderate the usage of IP addresses and to allow
a fair share of resources.
As there is a growing
need for IP addresses (137.189.x.x) with more
hostels are being built, the current one cannot
meet this expansion. We are now studying IP
V6 (128bit) to solve this issue. On the contrary,
with the time limit policy, all unused IP addresses
could be released for a better resource allocation.
- To
eliminate the registration process before the
actual use.
All ports are now enabled under
VPN technology. Residents do not have to contact
the College Office to update their registration
records. Once they have their VPN programme
and
CWEM account ready, they can make a connection
to ResNet. Hence, if they suspect their network
ports are damaged, they can also test the port
using other computer. This helps to speed up
the process in troubleshooting.
- To
avoid lengthy idle time.
Others may use an unattended
PC inappropriately and the residents have to
be responsible for any actions taken.
- To
reinforce prohibition of multiple logins to
ClassNet, ResNet and CUHKnet.
This helps to
prevent the abuse of accessing CUHK network
service (such as dialup service) by non-CUHK
members.
- To
determine the usage pattern for future network
planning.
