PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator. By using SSH/SSH2, data is encrypted during connection, and thus it is used by many servers now.

I. Download PuTTY
II. Setup and connect to the servers
III. Quit the session


I. Download PuTTY

  1. Right click on the links below and choose Save Target As...
    1. For Windows NT, 2000 and XP on Intel x86 :
      Right Click Here to save Putty.exe
    2. For Windows NT on Alpha :
      Right Click Here to save Putty.exe
  2. Save it on the Desktop

II. Setup and connect to the server

  1. Double click putty on the Desktop

  2. In the PuTTY configuration panel,
    type in Host name(or IP address)

    e.g. For connecting ITSC server 'Logic', you type
    Host Name: logic.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk
  3. Click Open
  4. A login screen comes out same as using telnet
  5. Type in your username and password to login the session

III. Quit the session

  1. You should log out by typing the server's own logout command, such as logout or exit
    This might vary between servers.
  2. You can close the session by using the Close button,
    but this might confuse the server
