By using SSH, data is encrypted during connection, and thus it is used by many servers now. The following are procedures to use SSH connection.

  1. Make connections in SSH Secure Shell
  2. Upload files
  3. Download files
  4. Remote Terminal Connection

1. Make connections in SSH Secure Shell

a. Open Start Menu -> All Programs -> SSH Secure Shell ->SSH Secure Shell Secure File Transfer Client, a screen like Figure 1 would be shown.

b. Click on the "Quick Connect" icon on the Tool Bar

c. Enter Host Name (e.g ihome.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk) and User Name (i.e. your CWEM login ID), then click Connect

d. A dialog box would be prompted to ask for your password. You should input your CWEM password into it and click "OK". (Figure 4)

e. The login process is completed if the password is correct.
To save time on entering information on next login, you can type a name in the window “Add Profile”, and click the "Add to Profiles" button. (Figure 5)
Next time when you login you can just click “Profiles” and choose your connection instead of entering all information again. (Figure 6)

f. Now you can see a screen as Figure 7.

g. On the left, it would be the file system of your Local Computer (Figure 8a), while the central frame is the folder view of your Remote Site and the rightmost frame shows the files of your Remote Site (Figure 8b).

h. You can end your connection by clicking the "Disconnect" button on the Tool Bar. And then close the Program to exit. (Figure 9)

2. Upload files

a. Select the correct directory in your Local Computer.

b. Choose the file to be uploaded (To select multiple files, press Ctrl on your keyboard and use the mouse to click on the files at the same time) under Local Name from the left frame.

c. Select the directory of the Remote Site that you would like to upload your file to in the right frame.

d. Right click the selected file, and click "Upload". (Figure 10)

e. If the transmission is completed, you can see the uploaded file on your Remote Site. (Figure 11)

3. Download files

a. Select the correct directory in your Local Computer.

b. Choose the file that you want to download (To select multiple files, press Ctrl on yourkeyboard and use the mouse to click on the files) from the right frame.

c. Select a directory that you would like to download your file from the left frame.

d. Right click on your selection and click "Download". (Figure 12)

e.     When the transmission is completed, you will see the downloaded file on your Local Computer. (Figure 13)

4. Remote Terminal Connection

a. Launch the SSH Secure Shell by clicking Start Menu -> All Programs -> SSH Secure Shell -> Secure Shell Client, and select the server you wish to connect to from the "Profiles" button (Figure 14)

b.     Once the remote terminal server is connected, you will receive messages returned by the server. You can type in command and start your work. (Figure 15)
