This computer aided instruction (CAI) project is an attempt on improving elementary Japanese learning via the use of computer programs. It consists of 48 lessons which corresponds to the chapters in the Japanese textbooks published by the Japanese Studies Department, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. We believe that it can also be used to improve Japanese learning even if you learn Japanese through other textbooks.
You may wonder what are the aspects that our learning aids covered, you can look at the sample screenshots for more details. If you are interested, you can start using the aids by following the listed instructions.
To use the Japanese-learning aids, you should have some ways to input and display Japanese on your computer and are using PC-compatible computers with Microsoft Windows.
If you are not using Windows 2000 nor Japanese Windows 95, 98, you can input and display Japanese on your computer by using Japanese-enabling programs. We have tested two programs that should work. One is called KANJIWEB which can be downloaded from www.kanjiweb.com. The other is called NJSTAR which can be downloaded from www.njstar.com. These two programs are not free. After you evaluated that they suit your needs, please buy them.
Special notes: There are some Chinese programs that allows you to input Japanese kanas in BIG-5 encoding (usually used in Taiwan and Hong Kong). Our learning aids does not support this kind of Japanese input.
When you can input and display Japanese on your computer, you need to download and install one more program called Authorware 4.0 plug-in before you can use the project. It takes about 10 minutes if you use a 56k modem. After downloading it, please remember to install it before you use our Japanese-learning aids.

These explanatory notes, in traditional Chinese, are the supplements to the Japanese textbook published by the Japanese Studies Department (JAS), the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The notes are arranged corresponding to the chapters of the JAS textbooks. The lesson review section of the Japanese-learning aids in this page contains parts of the textbooks. We hope that you may find the notes useful after you try a few chapters of our Japanese-learning aids.
