Bryophytes

  • are eukaryotes with chlorophylls a and b, and are members of the Kingdom Plantae. They differ from algae in having multicellular sex organs (gametangia) and spore-producing organs (sporangia) which are surrounded by a sterile jacket,
  • are land plants and thus display adaptations to the land, e.g. rhizoids, air-pores, and cuticle,
  • differ from other land plants (more specifically, vascular plants) in
    • (1) having the haploid gametophyte as the dominant phase in the alternation of generation and
    • (2) without lignified vascular tissues.
