Openings for Teaching Positions

(1) Assistant Professor (Ref. 08/219(685)/2)
Applicants should have (i) an MPhil or PhD degree in linguistics or applied
linguistics with a specialization in second language acquisition; (ii)
knowledge of Chinese and the ability to lecture in both English and
Putonghua; preferably also (iii) expertise in one or more of the following
areas: acquisition of Chinese as a second language, language pedagogy, and
language variation; and (iv) knowledge of a foreign language and relevant
research experience. The
appointee will (a) teach courses in second language acquisition, linguistics
and language teaching; and (b) supervise projects and theses of
undergraduate, MA, MPhil and PhD students.
Appointments will normally be made on contract basis for up to two
years initially commencing August 2009, leading to longer-term appointment
or substantiation later subject to mutual agreement.
(2) Instructor I(s) / Instructor II(s) (Full-time) /
Part-time Instructor(s)

The department has a Modern
Languages component which now offers teaching positions in French, German,
Spanish (full-time or part-time) and Thai (part-time only).
Applicants should have (i) a relevant Master’s degree or above; (ii)
linguistics training background; (iii) experience in teaching courses in one
of the languages above as a foreign/second language;
(iv) research interest in language teaching methodology and second
language acquisition; (v) experience in curriculum development; and (vi) be
able to use English as a medium of instruction; and preferably (vii)
experience in teaching Asian learners at university level.
Appointments will initially be made on contract basis for up to two years
commencing late August 2009, renewable subject to satisfactory performance,
availability of funding, and mutual agreement.
Salary and Fringe Benefits
Salary will be highly
competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The University offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package for
full-time appointments, including medical care, plus a contract-end
gratuity for appointment of two years or longer; and housing benefits for
eligible appointees [post (1) only].
