Admission Requirements



Candidates for admission to the programmes should meet all qualification criteria of the University Graduate School. (Please refer to the latest Postgraduate Prospectus.) All applicants should submit a written statement explaining the purpose of their application. Applicants will be interviewed as part of the admission process. Past academic record, work experience, reference letters, and language abilities will be considered in the admission decision.

Study Scheme and Graduation Requirements
PhD Programme in Linguistics (full-time and part-time)


1. Coursework Requirement
Students are required to complete a minimum of 24 units of courses for graduation.
 
(i) Required Courses:

2. Comprehensive/Qualifying Examination
(a) Part One of the Qualifying Examination for Ph.D. Candidature:
A written comprehensive examination based on a general reading list approved by the Graduate Panel. The examination will normally take place at the end of the second semester for full-time students and the third semester for past-time students. Postponement may be granted by the Graduate Panel upon production of a legitimate explanation.

(b) Part Two of the Qualifying Examination for Ph.D. Candidature:
Submission of two papers, and a thesis proposal to be defended in an oral examination. Students are required to submit two papers, one consisting of a comprehensive review of literature in the student’s area of research, and the other a quality research paper on issues related to the student’s thesis. The second paper should be publishable or acceptable for presentation at an academic conference. These two papers, together with a formal thesis proposal, must be submitted by the end of the fourth semester for full-time students and the sixth semester for part-time students.

Students are required to defend their thesis proposals in an oral examination. Students are expected to pass Part One and Part Two of the qualifying examination for Ph.D. candidature no later than the fourth semester for full-time students and the sixth semester for part-time students. Students are allowed no more than two attempts at passing the qualifying examinations or parts thereof. Any second attempt must come within his months of the first one.


3. Other Requirements
(a) IT Proficiency Test
(For students admitted in 2000-01 and thereafter only.)
(b) Thesis
The thesis, when completed, will be assessed by thesis committee and by at least one external examiner. Ph.D. candidates are required to defend their theses at a public oral defence.
(c) Third Language Requirement
As part of the general Graduate School requirement for the Ph.D. programme, study of a language other than Chinese and English is required, unless exemption is granted. Students must complete with satisfactory results at least 6 units of advanced courses or above offered by the language Departments/Units at CUHK under the current curriculum. Alternatively, completion with satisfactory results of any language courses comparable to the year three courses offered at CUHK is also accepted as equivalent qualification. In some cases, a special language test may have to be arranged in coordination with the language Departments/Units in order to examine the student’s competence in a third language. Passing the test will also fulfill the language requirement for Ph.D. candidature.
(d) English Proficiency Requirement
English proficiency for non-local applicants admitted in 2001-01 and thereafter should meet the requirements set by the Graduate School before admission.
(e) IPL Requirement
Students admitted in 2001-02 and thereafter must complete the Improving Postgraduate Learning (IPL) course entitled “Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research”.


M.Phil. Programme in Linguistics (full-time and part-time)

2. Other Requirements
Students must also satisfy the following requirements:
(a) Pass the IT Proficiency Test
(b) Submit a written thesis approved by the supervisor.
(c) Attend an oral defence after submission of the thesis as approved by the Graduate Panel
(d) Complete 9 units of a third language (i.e. a language in addition to Chinese and English). Students may take a third language course offered by other Departments of the University. Exemption could be considered on a case by case basis with approval from the Division Head.
(e) Meet the English Proficiency Requirements set by the Graduate School before admission.
(f) Complete the Improving Postgraduate Learning (IPL) course entitled “Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research”.
