The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is based at the Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH), a 1,477 bed (as of 1/1/2012) tertiary referral teaching hospital affiliated with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The university department is distinct from, but integrated with the Hospital Authority (HA) Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. Both are led by Professor Tony Gin who is the Chairman of the CUHK Department, Chief of Service of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at PWH and Cluster Coordinator (Anaesthesia) of the New Territories East Cluster (NTEC). The CUHK department is mainly involved in teaching and research while the HA department is responsible for providing services for Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine, and for all staff and management of the Operating Theatres (OT), Sterile Supply Unit (SSU), and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
