The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the process of enabling people to increase control over and to improve their health as health promotion. In broader term, health education comprises consciously constructed opportunities for learning designed to improve health literacy, including improving knowledge and developing life skills which are conductive to individual and community health.
The Centre for Health Education and Health Promotion was established in August 2000 with the vision to promote health education and health promotion through training, education, research and service development. The Center has dedicated her efforts on promoting health in the settings where people live, work, learn and play, and positioned her role as the 'catalyst' and 'champion for health promotion' to forge and nurture strategic partnerships with people and organizations to mobilize and facilitate health promotion. In February 2002, the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) has designated the Centre to be the Liaison Office for the Pearl River Region (southern part of China, Macau and Taiwan) to coordinate IUHPE activities in this area.
