The Department is involved in the coordination and teaching of the Haematology, Infection and Immunity Panel within the undergraduate Integrated Medical Sciences course for second year medical students as an introduction to microbial diseases and for third year medical students that focuses on clinical presentation and management of important human microbial diseases. The course comprises of lectures and problem-based laboratory sessions. Topics such as pathogenesis, natural history, laboratory diagnosis, management and prevention of infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites are covered. Special emphasis is placed on infection control within the hospital and in the community. The Department also participates in the teaching of other panels from medical years one to four, the selected study modules from medical years one to three and the infection course for year five medical students. Other undergraduate courses include those offered to students of the Nethersole School of Nursing and School of Pharmacy. Other than students of the University, the infection control module is offered by the Department to overseas elective students attached to the University. Postgraduate courses leading to the degrees of MPhil and PhD provided by the Department have trained many students specializing in various areas of Microbiology and Virology.

General information for admission to Graduate studies leading to MPhil and PhD degrees in Microbiology can be obtained from the University Graduate School website. Research interests of individual teacher can be obtained from their web pages at List of Staff .
