About the University
Incorporated in October 1963 under a Hong Kong ordinance, The Chinese University of Hong Kong is a bilingual (Chinese and English) and bicultural institution of higher learning. Its objectives are to (i) assist in the preservation, dissemination, communication and increase of knowledge; (ii) provide regular courses of instruction in the humanities, sciences and other branches of learning of a standard required and expected of a university of the highest standing; and (iii) stimulate the intellectual and cultural development of Hong Kong and thereby assist in promoting its economic and social welfare.
The University has its origin in three post-secondary colleges: New Asia College (founded 1949), Chung Chi College (founded 1951), and the United College for Hong Kong (founded 1956). In December 1976, a new ordinance made important changes to the constitution governing the University and the constituent colleges. An ordinance for the fourth college, Shaw College, was enacted in July 1986. The new college commenced admission in 1988.
The University is now a comprehensive modern institution with a magnificent campus and excellent facilities. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that are widely recognised by the international academic community.
The coming years promise rapid growth of the Pacific rim, and of China in particular. Hong Kong will contribute toward meeting the need for educated manpower to support China's development. The Chinese University with its unique background and attributes, its cultural roots, its links to the international academic community and its established record over the years, has enormous potential for making significant contributions in the new and challenging environment.
As a comprehensive modern university, CUHK offers quality education to more than 12,000 students. As a research institution, it is committed to the creation of knowledge through research and the provision of strong postgraduate programmes by research.
We expect to see the University continue to develop as a place of learning and academic freedom; a university that explores, transmits and disseminates knowledge through its research, teaching and publications, a university that demonstrates quality and a sense of purpose within the global academic community; and a university that provides leadership in higher education in Hong Kong and the neighbouring region.
