BACKGROUND and FUNDING SOURCE
The need for evidence-based practice and the problems of utilising research findings in practice are well recognised. Such findings indicate the importance of formulating strategies to develop research, and the application of that research in nursing practice and promoting a culture of evidence-based care. The strategy also needs to help nurses to understand and apply appropriate research findings. One way of achieving these aims has been through the establishment of a Nursing Practice Research Unit with generous support from the Nethersole Endowment Fund.
The Nethersole Nursing Practice Research Unit (NNPRU) has been operating at the Nethersole School of Nursing since 2006 to design and test innovations in nursing practice that can be implemented and evaluated, and then disseminated to other local health care settings. The NNPRU is a ¡§model unit¡¨ where clinical protocols, clinical pathways and clinical technological and resource innovations (e.g. nurse-coordinated care) are developed.
This initiative is made possible by cooperating with the Geriatric Rehabilitation Unit of the Department of Medicine and Geriatrics of the United Christian Hospital. With the rapidly aging population, there is an urgent need to develop innovations and excellence in the care of older patients. The unit also provides excellent opportunities for students to learn about the development and application of research in clinical practice.
