Welcome Message
It is my great pleasure as chair of the organising committee to invite you to the Fourth Pan-Pacific Nursing Conference and the Sixth Hong Kong Nursing Symposium on Cancer Care to be held in November 2008 in Hong Kong. This is the fourth time the School of Nursing at The Chinese University of Hong Kong has hosted this very successful conference in collaboration with the Nursing schools from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Open University of Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong as well as Fudan University and Xian Jiaotong University in mainland China. The theme for the conference this year “Managing chronic illness: challenges and opportunities for nursing practice and research”, has been particularly chosen to acknowledge the threat of chronic disease to the health of populations across different countries and in different cultures. The aim of the conference is to bring together nurses from across cultures and disciplines to share developments and innovative approaches to the management of chronic disease. Bringing together nursing practice and research allows debate and discussion of such strategies from an evidencebased approach to the discipline. The keynote speakers, invited to present papers at the conference and participate in the round table discussions, are internationally renowned scholars in the field of chronic disease management. Their state-of-the-art knowledge will contribute to the exchange of information and debate about the latest developments in the field thereby facilitating the development of health care delivery and health care policy in the Pan-Pacific region. It is also a great pleasure to welcome participants to Hong Kong; a dynamic and vibrant city bringing together the richness of Chinese and Western cultures in a spectacular setting. We look forward to seeing you in November 2008. Sheila Twinn
