- Note the very coarse basophilic stippling (bluish dots) in the RBCs
- This heavy metal can inhibit the enzyme pyrimidine 5' - nucleotidase responsible for RNA degradation
- Patient may present with abdominal pain and neurological complication
- Examine for the presence of 'lead line' in the gums and ring sicleroblasts in the marrow
